View Full Version : Photo competition - Round 11 - 'Circles' - Discussion

The theme for round 11 of the photo competition is 'Circles'.

Should be an easy one to keep on topic, I hope! Photograph anything which is circular or spherical. From here at my desk I see lots of eligible subjects - the mouth of a cup or glass, a plant pot, the top of a bottle, the buttons on my phone, the earpieces on my headphones, the end of a whiteboard marker... plenty of possibilities without even moving.

In contrast to previous themes, please don't try and stretch the meaning of this one - so, for example, a pic of your circle of friends is well off topic. Your photo must include the whole or part of a circle or it's disqualified. (An ellipse is acceptable :))

To keep things tidy, all discussion to be held in this thread, please. Competition entries go here (http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?t=360112).

Good luck everyone :D

Rules (changes from previous rounds in italics):

1. No image will be greater than 800 pixels along its longest side.
2. Image overall will not exceed 120kb.
3. Image must have been taken within the competition period, which is from 8th Sept to midnight on 22nd Sept.
4. Each submitter can change their posted image at any time (using edit function).
5. Maximum of three (3) images per submitter, per competition.
6. Digital manipulation is permitted in order to correct technical issues such as dust or noise on the image. Subtle sharpening, levels and contrast adjustment are allowed, provided that the end result faithfully resembles the image that was in front of the camera during the exposure. It is not permitted to add or remove elements of the image or to apply digital 'effects'.
7. Image must be hosted so that it appears correctly in the competition thread and must remain so for the period of the competition including voting. Any images that do not appear correctly won't poll may votes, obviously.
8. Image must be titled but not on the image itself. I.e. some bold text naming the image should be posted at the same time as the image itself. In addition, any details of the image itself should also be posted (this is a learning exercise after all). E.g. EXIF data or maybe just aperture, shutter speed, equipment used.
9. There will be no posts in the competition thread other than those for the posting of competition images. All discussion should be held in other threads.
10. There are no judges, only votes from Scoobynet members, and it's their collective decision which is final. The '10 points' voting scheme will be used.
11. Images will meet the requirements of the ScoobyNet T&Cs
12. Winner gets to choose the theme for the next round.

Damn!

If only a small element of rule bending were allowed..... I took these about three weeks ago and they'd be spot on topic. Watcha think?

mad_dr: you really want to use [img] tags, not [url] tags so your pic appears correctly in the entries thread. Lazy people like me won't bother to click the link when it comes to voting...

Good pics mate.

Quick question: What light source was used for the second pic? It looks like flash was used but your comment says that no flash was used. I'd have thought that from such a perpendicular angle to the subject, any light source other than the flash, would have been obscured by the camera and would have casted a shadow on the speaker.

The golf balls one is nice too, although because our 5700s are absolutely sh1te at low-light focussing, none of the balls are quite in focus. Did you consider using manual focus and resubmitting?

Good pics though!

My first effort is up there now...

Quick question: What light source was used for the second pic?

There was no flash used (I rarely use the flash for close up work, its too harsh), the light source came from my trusty old pen torch (as used on nearly all of my entries in previous rounds) as it is extremely flexible as I can position the light source exactly where I want it, and in the case of CONES it was held along side the lens.

BALLS came out just as I wanted it to (although I did run off 40 shots to get it).

A general query as opposed to one specifically about this comp.

I cannot shoot in B&W, I have a D70 which will not do it. Would converting to B&W on the PC be disallowed? I do not have apic to submit, but I was just wondering.

I don't see why not. The rules on digital manipulation are really there to ensure that the image is representative of what was in front of the camera - ie. to prohibit cloning out of undesirable elements (objects, highlights etc), or selective blurring, posterisation and other digital effects which are really what I'd refer to as 'image creation', and not photography.

B&W has been with us forever, though, and I doubt anyone could argue it's not in the spirit of the competition - so unless anyone strongly objects I'd say go for it.

I'm sure we allowed digital files to be converted to B&W in previous rounds.

I think the fact all 3 golf balls are out of focus by varying degrees makes the picture far more interesting :)

Sonic, that's horrible. I trust there's a story behind it...?

:)

I know its horrible, I had to remove it afterwards, yes there is a story behind it

I basically woke up to it this mornig, as it was clean & round, thought I would take a few quick snaps :D

I've just put a few initial shots up...

If anyone wants a few hundred shots of wooden rings, loo rolls and white balls with black concentric circles - all in various configurations and lighting setups - then you know where to come!

I might dig out some of the 'also rans' which I quite like and post them here, but the Mrs had casting vote on the final submissions and hence my more 'arty' shots were vetoed.

Here's one for now:

...and here's "Bloo Rolls" (well, it amused me) that I've just replaced:

Well I've put something up.

Technically the first one isn't *actually* round as there is an equatorial flattening but I'm sure it can be overlooked ;) And the second has several semi-circles as well as being round (though not exactly circular...)

More of an oblate spheroid ;)

Excellent balloon pic :)

The sad thing is I was down the Blue John mines when this competition flashed into my head and I thought "Hey, these might look good!"

God help me...
