Cool idea - I might even get round to entering this time :)

You just need another thread for the photos themselves (since this one seems to have turned into the discussion thread :)) - it keeps things tidy if all the pics are together in the same place.

Been such a while since I visited the photo comp, can you remind me what the rules are... & what's the end date for posting?

Thanks :D

no end date decided yet - will go with the flow.
Don't know the rules - can somebody post them here please?

Not much use really :D

Rules:
1. No image will be greater than 800 pixels along its longest side.
2. Image overall will not exceed 120kb.
3. Image must have been taken within the competition period, which is at the discretion of ScoobyDoo555, the winner of the last round.
4. Each submitter can change their posted image at any time (using edit function).
5. Maximum of three (3) images per submitter, per competition.
6. Digital manipulation is permitted in order to correct technical issues such as dust or noise on the image. It is not permitted to add or remove elements of the image or to apply digital 'effects'.
7. Image must be hosted so that it appears correctly in the competition thread and must remain so for the period of the competition including voting. Any images that do not appear correctly won't poll may votes, obviously.
8. Image must be titled but not on the image itself. I.e. some bold text naming the image should be posted at the same time as the image itself. In addition, any details of the image itself should also be posted (this is a learning exercise after all). E.g. EXIF data or maybe just aperture, shutter speed, equipment used.
9. There will be no posts in the competition thread other than those for the posting of competition images. All discussion should be held in other threads.
10. The collective decision of the Scoobynet members who vote in the voting thread is final.
11. Images will meet the requirements of the ScoobyNet T&Cs
12. Winner gets to choose the theme for the next round.

OK then, the closing date will be August 30th (midnight) - will give people the chance to take some piccies over the Bank Holiday.

Is it just me or are some people not bothering with the rules? I'm just wondering, I cant see the 'detail' theme in some shots tbo, but I'm thinking mainly about the size and resolution. I'd love to put up full size pics myself as resizing them obviously loses loads of detail. I hope I'm not coming across as some kill joy pedant, just wondering if links to large files are OK.

AndyC_772

As to large files:

1. No image will be greater than 800 pixels along its longest side.
2. Image overall will not exceed 120kb.

... so that would be a 'no', then. After all, I don't think a high quality, detailed photo of an arbitrary subject is really on topic anyway, it's just a test of how sharp your lens is.

I think quite a few shots are off-topic myself too, which is a shame. I can almost understand it when the topic is really difficult or ambiguous, but this one's pretty clear and easy IMHO.

I thought so Andy, I hope everyone takes note then ;)

I'm just thinking, after looking at some of the entries perhaps the competition title is a bit ambiguous, either that or people are thinking that 'attention to detail' means 'up close' or 'detailed' shots. I know the entry title was briefly explained but what do others think?

I think "attention to detail" is ambiguous. If you want to argue semantics then "detail" will be probably be defined by most people as small or minor decoration, detail or structures, and as such my photos would be on-topic. If you want photos of a "tidy kitchen or CDs in alphabetical order" then you really want photos whose subject is, for example, attention to "order" or "sequence". In which case my photos would be off-topic. Either way I don't mind. If you decide it's the order/sequence you want I'll be happy to delete my post to keep the competition on-topic. (I did adhere to the rules though!) :D

Jye

Yes m_t, I to think the title is ambiguous, but I kind of understood the gist of it exactly as you put as 'small or minor decoration, detail or structures'. I was just wondering how others felt so thanks for the reply. I have nothing to do with the running of the competition btw, just an entrant like yourself so I would hardly wish for you or anyone else to have delete photos :)

imo I think the attention to detail in your setup just to get those shots is well within the boundaries of the comp :D

just re-read all of this properly, I'm mega busy and dont have time to resize my pics, they were just ones I had already uploaded I could just link from my gallery, so i will delete them.

On reflection I do think attention to detail is extremely ambiguous and I think that is reflected in the variety of pics uploaded.

Ed I deffo wouldnt delete you pics as they are amazing. The more people who see them the better. I was only wondering how to 'interprate' the rules for my own benefit tbo :D

Thanks for the compliment :)

Personally I feel they all fit into the 'ATD' theme, but they are too big for the rules, but I just haven't got time at the mo to sort it out.

Perhaps if you all just squint when you look at them?? ;)

This is what happens when people start over-thinking  :D

The title, IMHO, is pretty simple - the key word being "detail" :p

Are you sure you lot don't work in Education?! ;)

If you think it's too ambiguous, and the vast majority agree, fine. Sort it out between yourselves.
I'm not being ar$ey, but I really haven't got the time nor the inclination to mess about with this if people are going to pedantic :( The prize isn't worth the effort.

Shame, as there are some fabulously detailed pictures already........

PMSL!!

Dan, I'm not bothered about the subject matter (in fact, I think it's a great topic which naturally lends itself to diversity). I hope nobody has taken my post the wrong way, I wasn't being arsey but just pointing out that if people want to get pedantic about ambiguity they had better clearly define what they mean! :D

As for working in education - LOL!

Glad you took that in the tone in which it was meant :D

I think it is fine as it is, and let the judges decide who has best interpreted the brief :)

I still don't have time to reduce the size of mine tho ;):p

ok not quite sure if I've understood the topic but I've added a pic.
Might get a chance to add some more if I have some inspiration over the weekend.

Actually I'm a bit short of ideas myself too. Shame, really - I've not taken any pics I'm really pleased with for a while. (My excuse is that I'm a bit distracted by the imminent arrival of a new scooby, though :))

Must try harder, though...

I've just put some entries in..... a combination of the various ways of interpreting the subject.... sort of relevant, I guess.

....well, actually I was bored and fancied a play with the new Neotec tripod so found a few excuses and snapped away this afternoon (well, and a bit this morning as well). Any excuses to play with the camera...

I've got far too much photography gear and not enough time or relevant excuses to get it all out and usefully spend a few hours snapping away. Thanks Scoobynet photo comp! The GF complains when I take over half the house with brollies, lighting stands, tripods, cables and coloured bits of card and stuff as well......... Women... I ask you.... You can't live with 'em and you can't shoot 'em!

That waffle brings me on to a relevant question - Anyone got any good recommendations for remote strobe triggers? Ideally I want an RF system that has a transmitter on the hot-shoe, and triggers mains or battery powered receivers on at least 2 studio strobes (so 2 receivers) via a PC lead. I can find stupidly expensive kit (like the Bowens kit, and the Pocket Wizard), and I can find the 39 quid Ebay kit (that does 20 feet)... The Bowens kit gets bad reviews - and I really need something that will do a bit further than 20 feet. 20 yards would be better...

Anyhow - time to try and think of any more relevant entires... <Hmmmm....>....

Just had a quick look through some other entries.... very nice indeed.

However - just how stringently are these competition rules enforced????

AndyC, Jye, ScoobyK, etc. - You may want to revist the file size and/or dimensions of your entries if we're all to be playing on a level field... ;)

Oops... will re-save at a slightly lower quality. Sorry :(
