Trying to drill a few small holes through the concrete floor outside the back of my house. The problem is that I am only getting about quater of an inch deep before the bit melts
I have tried taking it slowly (using hammer action) but just seem to hit a dead stop and the bit rounds off.
What am I doing wrong
BTW I am using cheapish BandQ bits.

Is it reinforced concrete? steel bar..
cheap bits is bad for a start.. start with a smaller dia hole first.. the bigger the diameter the slower the rotation on the drill..
All else fails.. hire an SDS+ Drill from HSS and enjoy.

Thanks David
Don't think it is a reinforcing bar, I think its the agregate (sp?) that they have used in its mix. Some of the pebbles are as hard as hell.
Only tried using a 5mm tipped bit, couldnt even get through with that :(
This all seems like a lot of hassel to screw a gazebo down :D

I had a similar problem a while ago and the solution made me feel a total idiot.
I had the drill rotating the wrong way  - which is why it wouldn't cut through as much as it should.

My drill will only go one way (being a cheapo Christmas present)

A normal hammer drill will always overheat the drill bit in concrete, best to use a SDS drill and bit.
