The house we are moving into only uses electricity, there is no gas meter but a gas connection not being used. My question is will it cost a huge amount to have this activated and a new meter put in.

Shouldn't cost you a single penny, simply ring Transco/british gas, and they'll fit you one, then get your plumber to plumb from the meter!!!
