Can I make a light just by fixing a piece of cable with earth , live and neutral wires to a plastic light bulb holder and a plug on the other end and just plug it in to an extension lead. What amp fuse would the plug need?

yes but you would be better finding the light circuit suppling the upstairs of the house and connecting into it and fixing a permanent light switch and rose/bulb.

The fuse rating based on a 100W or less bulb :-

100/230 = 0.43 amp

So a 1,3 or 5 amp fuse.

Thats what i have, not worth the time to do it properly for the amount we use it.

I know it would be but I don`t know how to do that plus I`m only in the loft a few times a year so not really worth doing it! Thanks orbv.

Dont bother then, use a torch.. or buy an inspection lamp.. much safer.

twin and earth cable isnt designed to be flexible.

Would it be unsafe then? I wouldn`t really need to bend it much would it need the cable with the earth wire or just the other two?

What about an inspection lamp with a hook on the end to hang on a nail or screw?

I may get one instead but the ones in B+Q only take max 60 watt bulbs I wanted about 100 watts.
