Is it possible to learn a building trade and get qualifications from it with out actually being involved in the trade?

I want to learn a trade and get some thing from it. i am in full time employment so it is difficult to work some where else. i've spoken to various college's and they all say "you need to be involved in the trade for the experience and on site assessment to gain any NVQ quals" I've heard of stock brokers/bank managers doing plumbing courses and then becoming good tradesmen. is it possible to do?

cheers Adam

you are never going to be good at a trade if you dont actively take part:eek: developing skill, speed and quaility of work takes years of practice:) people like yourself just get a real tradesman like my self more work, putting work right ;)

This is exactly the same as people who attend a few IT courses and obtain a MCSE, MCSA and consider them self IT Professionals. Qualification don't mean jack without the relevant expereince.

What trade where you actually looking at?

You need to do on the job training,as well as going to college. Its all well and good what they learn you at college but you need to be on site in the real world to see how its really done. Its a lot different too being in a classroom!!

where? in cloud cuckoo land? you can't be a good tradesman by reading a plumbing CDROM off ebay.

learn a trade by all means, its not that hard to do, go onto any site in the UK, and 85% of the workforce will be woodentops, if we can do it, anyone can :D, don't expect to be any good at it thogh until you actually do it.

If you want to be a plumber then be a plumber.. if you want to acheive and accrue accolades why bother? If you want to be a bank manager then you don't knee certs in scaffolding do you. If you are a collector of certificates then bully you! Find your niche and stick to it. :D

Didn't someone post a similar question about 3 or 4 weeks ago?? And got the same answers, do it properly, or not at all.

I remember cos I went off on a one about these blokes who do 6 week courses and call themselves tradesmen.

Not aiming at you btw Albert47 ;)
