I have been looking at some butchers block type worktop to make a computer desk and also some shelves in my den/office. I have found a place on the net that does 4M lenghts of 720x27mm " rubberwood" worktop at £140 a length +VAT.

1 4M lenth will be cut to form an L shaped desk, the other length is to be cut into 6 to make shelves about 1300 long x 360 deep.

question is, what is "rubberwood" never heard of it, also is the price ok?

rubberwood (havea brasiliensis) is the tree that grows in the tropics
and is used for producing raw material for latex
after some years the tree is felled due to reduced yield
solid beech worktops can be purchased for £80 for a 3050x600x28
happy shopping

I'd go for the Beech mate, thats what they use in chemical labs because it is very hard and resistant to staining. The only problem with block type worktops is you have to use a Junkers type oil on them, and several coats at that, They have to be recoated around every six months as well.

The cheapest place I found for solid wood work top was IKEA, think it is beech, also you can buy it in different lengths so may be able tyo get away with minimum waste off cuts!!!
