View Full Version : Nikon D70 - anyone got one? Jye 21 July 2004, 19:18 Pete, do tell, what did Watchdog have to say? Edcase 21 July 2004, 19:21 "1.4x teleconverter " what effect does that have on pic quality? None whatsoever noticeable to the human eye. It does however mean you lose a precious stop of light, but at least there is that tradeoff to be had! pslewis 21 July 2004, 19:23 Jye - you don't 'quite' understand me do you? ;) Tiggs - tell you what, I'll buy it off you at Xmas when they are £200!? Only if you chuck that Sigma lens in too! - what do you say?? Pete TopBanana 21 July 2004, 19:26 Go to the states and pick up a 300d body (digital rebel) for £400 equiv and that Sigma lens for £350 equiv. I bought a Sigma 12-24 and 105mm macro over there a couple of weeks ago - it works out roughly half price compared with the UK Tiggs 21 July 2004, 19:26 its a deal pete, Xmas 2009 and its yours....if you've made your mind up by then ;) ed....so the 1.4 makes the 70-200 a 98- 280 then? with a drop in appature? Jye 21 July 2004, 19:30 Jye - you don't 'quite' understand me do you? Emm, no thats why I asked. Are they pretty dodgy then? Edcase 21 July 2004, 19:30 its a deal pete, Xmas 2009 and its yours....if you've made your mind up by then ;) ed....so the 1.4 makes the 70-200 a 98- 280 then? with a drop in appature? no its more than that due to the difference in 35mm film and the digital ccd sensor. Cant remember the ratio, but it results in a 35mm equivalent of 315 or 320 IIRC. Tiggs 21 July 2004, 19:36 ahhh...i forgot the digital conversion! i assume the canon 77mm 500d fits the sigma fine? its a std screw fit is it? Edcase 21 July 2004, 19:38 yup absolutely, just screws straight in the end. I had a play yesterday, its amazing for flowers and the like. Tiggs 21 July 2004, 19:39 what lens was used for your close ups on the bee then? Daryl 21 July 2004, 19:45 ed....so the 1.4 makes the 70-200 a 98- 280 then? with a drop in appature? Field of view crop on the d70 is 1.5x, so a 70-200 would become 105-300. Adding the 1.4x convertor would give 147-420. Daryl 21 July 2004, 19:49 Lightness is NOT a good thing - not if it has a price ticket of £800!! Just noticed that the D70 is only 30g heavier than the 300D - hardly noticeable - whereas a 10D is 200g more than the Nikon! ;) Edcase 21 July 2004, 20:32 what lens was used for your close ups on the bee then? that was the 70-200 on its own!!! From about 8ft away. I don't exaggerate when I say its a good'un :D Jye 21 July 2004, 20:34 8 feet!!!!!! http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/images/smilies/eek.gif Tiggs 21 July 2004, 21:48 good god! i wouldnt be able to see a bee from 8 feet let alone decide to photo it! pslewis 22 July 2004, 00:04 Hey-Up! I don't want to startle you, but, have you seen the quality of the pictures from the Sigma SD10 DSLR?! Stunning!! Pete Jye 22 July 2004, 11:02 Tiggs, has your camera arrived yet? Jye 22 July 2004, 14:19 Just checked mine was dispatched from pixmania last night, phoned dhl and its on its way should be in my hands by tommorow :D Tiggs 22 July 2004, 19:03 yep- i just got in and its sat here! my 70-200mm 2.8 sigma will be here mon! pslewis 22 July 2004, 19:12 Good on ya' Tiggs and Jye! :D Dixons have the D70 in their stores now BUT with the 28-80mm Zoom Nikon Lens - at £850 ..... they also do this kit with the addition of a 75-300mm Zoom at £1050 (but these are not in stock) So, its true - if you want a UK one you can get one, just NOT with the 18-70mm Lens everyone wants! :( Pete Tiggs 22 July 2004, 19:13 what diff does the flash card make to these? i have a 512 with it and want a 1gb as well- the cost difference between cards is a lot for faster cards- does the D70 need a fast one or does it buffer internally somehow??? pslewis 22 July 2004, 19:21 "In continuous shooting mode, the D70 lived-up to Nikon's promise of 3 frames per second, capturing 11 images in 3.3 seconds; subsequent shots were taken at 7/10 second intervals. The D70's buffer performance is very good, taking only 10 seconds to flush a full buffer of JPEG Fine images to the CF memory card. These measurements were made using an AF-S Nikkor 18-70 mm lens and a fast Transcend 1GB CF memory card, shooting Large (3008x2000) JPEG Fine images" So, I would guess that a fast card is not required unless you want to regulary shoot lots of shots with the motordrive (sports?) Pete imlach 22 July 2004, 19:29 Is this 18-70 lens available more readily on it's own? ie, if a D70 body could be sourced more readily, can the lens be sourced separately more easily? Tiggs 22 July 2004, 19:50 theres a few D70's on ebay now via private UK sellers- be interesting to see what they go for Jye 22 July 2004, 23:18 Think I've seen the 18 - 20 advertised for £350 somewhere imlach, meant to retail at over £400 iirc. Printed out the 200 page pdf manual earlier, gonna read it now in bed, lol :D pslewis 22 July 2004, 23:47 £300 at Amazon - Camera Body is £750 ..... making £1050 The KIT is £899 Pete Jye 23 July 2004, 11:08 My camera has landed wahhay!! :D Dave T-S 23 July 2004, 12:02 A friend is on his way to Singapore at the mo. Can pick me up a D70/18-70 AFS for around £700 depending on exact rate of exchange on the day. Silly not to :D Harry_Boy 23 July 2004, 12:07 Harry_Boy It's a while since I caught up with this thread so I'm not ignoring you ;) Can I bring a couple of lenses to the next meet and have a play to see if it all works? TIA Andy Sure mate!!!:D:D:D Jye 24 July 2004, 10:25 Havent had much of a chance to play with my D70 but managed to snap a few trial shots at a friends. It was starting to get dark and was pretty overcast but even in auto and with me fiddling with everything without a clue I think these looks quite nice :) I guess saving it as a smaller sized jpeg pretty much destroyed a lot of the detail, I'll need to find a decent way of hosting the originals. http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v296/Jyester/DSC_0006.jpg http://img78.photobucket.com/albums/v296/Jyester/DSC_0052.jpg |
