Am I allowed to talk cameras on this thread seeing as that's how it start life? :p
I'm and engineer and another Yorkshireman but am keeping out of your toy throwing ;):D
Does anyone know how the 10D and 300D go on with independent lenses. I've got a Tamron 28-105 f/2.8 and Sigma 18-35 f/3.5 (both my original canon lenses failed on the autofocus (once burnt etc... :()
Is it still a rechipping job on the lenses? You hear about sigma needing / doing it or do tamron require it as well?
I'm being tempted by the 10D and 300D - I've been on medium and large format for a while which I love but want something digitally a bit better than my S40 compact...

STi-Frenchie 15 July 2004, 06:47 The D2H sports a Nikon designed CCD and shutter/buffer system that allows continuous 8 frame per second shooting with a 40 image buffer. Couple that to one of the fastest most accurate auto focus systems and ditto the metering system again designed in house and you can see an awful lot of R&D has gone into this camera.
I own a D2H and it is, quite simply, an awesome piece of kit. I shoot RAW and it'll handle 26 consecutive frames at 11MB/frame with ease (40 frames is for JPEG shooting).
To get this thread back on track - you won't be disappointed with the D70 if you buy it. I know several people who own it and they are very, very happy with their purchase.

Yeah, but it's only 4 Megapixels ;)
I love it when people come out with that - a mate of mine swears blind his 8 megapixel Sony is a much better piece of kit - hey maybe he's right eh? ;)
(not that there is anything wrong with the Sony for what it is btw).

STi-Frenchie 15 July 2004, 10:36 Heh heh ! Yeah, but I guess I can live with the quality as I really don't need to go any bigger than 24x36" :)
Have you seen the results of using a dust-off (NDF) file in Nikon Capture? I thought I was witnessing a miracle the first time I used it ! No more healing tool for me ! Yipee !

Thank God for that I thought it was just me - thought I was seeing things :D :D
Edcase 15 July 2004, 10:44 *makes mental note to try dust off next time I'm post-processing in NC4.2*
chiark 15 July 2004, 11:49 I've got a D70 with the 18-70mm lens. I'd wholeheartedly recommend it. I also have the Sigma 70-300 Super APO II lens, which is a good 'un for the money.
The 10D is due for replacement any time now if the rumours are right - and I reckon that they must be - so that'll be an interesting one to watch. I did want a 10D until I convinced myself that the D70 was a better buy for me and that I didn't need to spend the extra cash - plus the D70 does quite a few things better. Your needs/wants may change this, but at least the info is out there to research against.
But seriously, what more do you want from a camera that the D70 doesn't offer (other than access to Canon glass?) ;)
I got mine from Fixation (http://www.fixation-uk.com) who are brilliant and regularly get stock, unlike non-Nikon dealers such as jessops. Fixation are set up first and foremost as a professional photographer's camera shop, but still treat the little guys (ie me) exceptionally well.
I just received a second hand 50mm 1.8 lens today. That is gobsmackingly good for the money, too!
Be warned it is a slippery slope tho. Lenses, flashes, cards, ...
Go to a shop, pick up both the D70 and the 300D, spend time playing with both and see which you prefer. Both give superb images upto and beyond a4 printout, so unless you're planning on exhibiting they will both do what you want.
Cheers,
Nick.
pslewis 15 July 2004, 20:11 One of the most annoying things about my Minolta S304 is waiting for it to get ready to shoot, I know its a lot of money to pay for the luxury of Immediate power-Up on the D70 ............. but its one thing I crave!
Pete
chiark 16 July 2004, 09:45 Within reason, you can leave it on all the time... I left mine on after shooting two days ago, noticed today and the battery was still saying "full".
The performance is astonishing. Pick one up, turn it on, and you'll be hooked. Keep your P&S tho, as there's times when you want to take a camera with you and not lug around the SLR.

That's very true. I have an S7000 and lenses, filters, barrels etc which I lug around in a bag. Went on hols this year and to be honest I wish I'd taken my Ixus.

STi-Frenchie 16 July 2004, 11:03 Edcase - sample pics showing the effects of applying the dust-off image. No other retouching was done apart from a little sharpening. Magic, innit? :)

Why don't you take the lenses to your local dealer and see if they work! I suspect that if they are fairly recent models you will be OK.
I had to have a Sigma re-chipped (free if you are the original owner), took about 3 months in the end, after they had finished messing me about and lying to me
I have an S40, which is a great little camera, but obviously the 300D is in a different league. If I were you, I would wait a couple of months and see what Canon come up with next, I suspect it will be worth it :)
I had a look in Jessops for the D70 as well, and was told that they had two, one with a 18 - 35 lense for £1199 and one with a 24 - 85 lens for £1099. So what is the difference between these and the 18 - 70 and 28 - 80 lens normally found in the kits via the web. The reason being Jessops will price match but only if the cameras are identical. Are they at it to avoid price matching?
edited wrong price :)
Edcase 16 July 2004, 12:06 just received a second hand 50mm 1.8 lens today.
Awesome lens :)

Cool, mine is still relatively dust free, but I will defo give it a try :)
Daryl, thanks for the info - I'm finding a couple of people I know with a 10D and 300D so will be giving them a nudge...
The reviews I've seen tend to prefer the D70 over the 300D but I was leaning towards a 10D anyway to keep my existing glass. I might have to replace my 100-300, would love a 100-400 IS L lens but it's a bit on the pricey end :(
From the rumours kicking around, I'm probably going to be waiting to see what Canon comes up with but the Photokina trade show in Cologne is in September AFAIR so that's when things might start to happen... :)
3 months  - I don't use 35mm much at the moment but that's a heck of a long time for a tweak... :(
Geezer 16 July 2004, 12:57 If I were you, I would wait a couple of months and see what Canon come up with next, I suspect it will be worth it :)
When the 10D replacement comes out, there should be a significant price drop for the old one (just like happened to the D60), and should make 300Ds even cheaper too.
Hopefully the battle between Nikon and Canon will bring prices for entry level DSLRs down whilst pushing quality up. Usually does for these sort of goods.
As I'm not in the market for a DSLR for a few years yet, I can't wait!

If you want to get a 100-400IS, then don't get a 300D, it looks stupid with that lens on it :D ;)

Well I finallyy ordered a D70 5 mins ago, best price I could get (in stock) was £929 with the Nikkor AF-S DX. I also ordered two Sandisk 512MB ULTRA II Compact Flash cards. As I'm off to Italy soon so hopefully I should get some 'entertaining' pics for the SN comp :)
Should have said the 18-70mm f3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom
pslewis 16 July 2004, 22:11 Jye - where did that come from?
Amazon have them at that price but quote a 2 week delay - so, I would say they are not in stock as its just 24hrs then.

alcazar 17 July 2004, 08:24 Also interested as to where...........I found ONE in my searches and not via the net, with that lens, and it was reserved, but I could have it if they never turned up.
They did!:(:

Pete, bought it from Savastore.com, a division of Watford Electronics. They had one available, now saying a 2 - 3 days lead time. I had the same problem finding this camera with the 18 - 70 lens, and who ever said it could be found with exactly this lens for £799 is talking rubbish.
Thank you for placing your order with Watford Electronics Limited.

I have to admit, that was me:(:
I originally found it on Dealtime at one of the internet traders, for just that price, advertised as a "kit" with that lens.
Further reading, however, showed that the price was for body only, and the kit was £929:(:
A bit of sharp advertising, there.

BTW: whoo-hoo, 5000 posts!:D:
pslewis 17 July 2004, 12:53 Fair do's Jye - you failed to give your credit card details, could you post them please to maintain the accuarcy of your info.!? ;)
Seriously, can let us know how you get on with it, whether its worth the dosh, is it too cumbersome, do you leave it on Auto Program all the time - that kind of stuff?
Have a good break away in Italy!
Pete
Geezer 17 July 2004, 13:23 You can pick up the D70 on Ebay with the 18-70 lens for about £750. It's from the US, but the warranty is valid and they come quickly. Bought my S7000 that way, saved about £150 and it came in 3 days, most impressed.
Geezer
lol @ alcazar, soz m8 :D
Pete my credit limit is stretched enough as buying the camera was just the start :(
I now have on order, a spare battery, Lowepro Toploader 65 AW camera bag, the already mentioned Sandisk 512MB ULTRA II Compact Flash X 2, and the ML-L3 remote control :)
Hopefully I can put all of the above to good use in Rome while preventing it being thieved by the local light findered brigade.
Will post up some snaps when I get back, 5th August or thereabouts.
Geezer thats a top price, just dont like or trust Ebay. Wont the power supply/battery charging be a problem then, ie US rather than EU and would customs not stiff you on the door step if you were unlucky?
Geezer 17 July 2004, 15:48 The camera that I got was UK spec, but you could get stiffed by customs if you were very unlucky. Even if you did, it would still work out less than a UK one.
Not everyone wants to go that route and I fully undertsand that, but it is an optiotn worth considering if you don't mind.
Geezer
im going ebay!
been after an SLR digital for a while and will get a US one in UK spec from Ebay...i'll let you all know if it arrives!
I think I'll be joining you Tiggs, Savastore.com/Watford electronics have renaged on their deal, i.e. far from being in stock they have a back order of, wait for it, 800 D70 customers, bloody hell :(
I also tried chiarks choice Fixaton, and they have a five page waiting list.....
Ebay have them in various guises, best looking imo is the one below: £820.00 plus £37 Fed Exp, and the disclaimer that they buyer will pay customm charge. Any idea how much this would be?
I think I may even forget the D70 and buy the EOS 300D for £700 all in with the lens :(

alcazar 19 July 2004, 16:28 Apparently, Dixons  have D70's in stock up here with the other lens, but could get me one by Thursday, or I could drive to Hull myself , if I wanted the DX lens Price was £1000 with that lens, or £849 with the other.
