I have just pulled up the quarry tiles in my entrance hall, which has left the floor looking somewhat secondhand!! I want to lay vinyl so the floor has to be pretty good, has any one used SL floor compound? If so how easy is it to use, and what depth will it float to?

Why didnt you lay the vinyl straight on the quarry tiled floor????

I have never used levelling compound before, or seen it used for that matter, but I would ensure the exposed concrete floor surface you have now got was roughed up to ensure a good bond between between itself and the new levelling compound.

I suspect there will be a minimum depth with which to lay the compound to, so you may find you have to dig out some more first - Oh the joys of DIY.

Roger

Glen,
I've not used it personally, but have seen it done, it doesn't seem to be that good to me, although it's supposed to be self levelling, it never looked that brilliant to me, maybe it wasn't done right, if it was wetter it might help it level more i guess, I'm guessing, but I would have thought minimum depth 1/4 inch or so.

How's tricks other than that mate, not seen ya for a while, august meet may well be in Wareham, keep an eye out!!!

Can't think of may other option mate, you might just have to give it a go and see how you get on, if thats the only way, it's the only way, how much thickness can you get away with adding??

when the floors are to rough to lay flooring on,i normally screed it first, that should do the trick:) you can buy it from B+Q it pretty easy to do.

latex leveling compound is very easy to use
will lay up to 3mm per coat
can be overlaid
just smooth out well with a float trowel
sanding can be done but not essential

sl is easy. just get it from your local builders merchant. mix it up (depends on the depth that you want for the mix) i used some last week and you could go upto 5-6mm in one coat and you can feather it out onto a smooth surface. i did two coats one thick (but still runny) i spread it on and floated it off and let that coat set, i then made anther mix quite runny and pour it over the floor and it ran where the floor was slightly out and level it up. once dry a quick brush to remove the dust, and the floor was spot on.

nb
it may be wise to put a mix pva and water on the floor before you start leveling.
