We recently bought an AEG washing machine at Comet, it was an end of line model & cost £329 - slightly over your budget but we highly recommend these machines. We had to check out 2 or 3 Comet shops before we found it. If £300 really is your top budget then look at Candy which will be a lot cheaper but well made.

Dont buy a Candy!

Buy a Bosch, you get a two year garauntee and they never break down

Also stay well away from Hotpoint - the customer service is none existant.

Check here for cheapest suppliers www.pricerunner.com

Just bought a Bosch from Comet, down from £499 to £349, very happy with it, after a search of the web Comet were amazingly the cheapest, some web sites still knocking it out for £500 +
Model No BOSCH WFO285SGB

Bought a Hotpoint from Comet 2 1/2 years ago. Drum bearings went a month or so ago and was fixed under the extended maintenance agreement. No probs getting it sorted (except Comet's engineers cover part of the country, hotpoint the rest so had to ring a second number). Was pleasantly surprised with the customer service. Have to admit it was nearly a week until they could come out but I'd rather be told that upfront than guess at what is happening. Engineer turned up as promised with the right parts and fixed it quickly and no fuss.

Avoid AEG.
Bought a new washer, a dryer and also a freezer under three years ago and two out of three have gone wrong so far.

Siemens - bought mine for £360 8 years ago and it's only needed a control panel (£40) in all that time, with probably 5 washes per week.

Notice anything? All the best machines are German....

Yep, Meile are the best, but insanely expensive. But you will still have it in twenty years and it will never have broken down. AEG are next best, but still pricey, and Bosch are third. They used to be expensive, but they are now a lot more competative. All other brnads vary from barely adequate to rubbish.

That said, my Hotpoint is nine years old and apart from a minor problem with starting it (it has to be started about four times) it has never broken down. Of course now I've said that...

why not get an import Miele, they cost £ to € price in Germany. I have an 18 year old Miele vacuum cleaner and bought a dryer and a washing machine 4 years ago with no issues. Needed to get the cable changed on the vacuum cleaner last year though.

Friend of mine was looking. Salesman: "These will last you 20 years." Friend's wife: "yes, but with advances in technology I'll probably want to buy another one after 10 years!"

Am told Bosch and Siemens are from the same factory - they choose the badge according to marketing. Siemens go to the models with more functions (applies to all their goods).

We got a Siemens as that's what was in the discount store at the time :)

Despite the comments on technology and functions, the only buttons I ever use on a washer are basically Whites, Coloureds and Half Load. Dunno what the rest are for...

May I remind you that the search facility is working for all :D

We had a discussion on this a month or two back....other threads around if you type "washing machine" into the search...

However, this is a good 'un :

whlie Miele are good who on earth buys one on the basis that it will last 20 years?????

you will NOT want to use a 20 year old machine anymore than a 20 year old TV..get a grip people!

Yeah - had a Miele for EIGHT years now. never gone wrong - ever. Also got a Miele tumbler and vac. The biz....

Parents got a Bosch about five years ago, genreally reliable, but a couple of small warranty claims for the door latch and on/off switch.

My advice? Credit card a Miele. You'll not regret it, it's the only thing I'd trust with my smalls.... ;)

Hmm....dunno. Some people see a washing machine as a utensil, not a fashion accessory.

My parents had their first washing machine for 20 years. ie, it worked, it washed perfectly well, so why change it?

TBH, tv's move more with technology changes. Washing machines still do roughly the same as they did 20 years ago - wash clothes by spinning them in a drum using water & detergent.

Agree mate, can't side with Tiggs on this one :)
Our Miele has a 1600 spin speed (remember, it's 8 yrs old!), and a wool programme that's as gentle as, er, well, a very gentle thing... And a 95 degree nuke em soak the lot programme.....

The only problem is when the other half thinks 'dirty woollens', and puts 'em on 95.... Jumpers end up about the right size for the cat....

I'll join the Bosch/Miele fan club, but would have to defend Tiggs a bit. I've had a Miele dishwasher for 12 years and whilst it performance is flawless it does look a bit dated. Of course the answer is to hide it (if possible) within the kitchen units and then 20 year life-span is not a problem.

Also had a hotpoint washing machine for 12 years (did lots of buying 12 years ago - lived in Germany so got tax-free :D ) and its still going but yes customer service is crap and it now leaks (fair enough after this time).

Bet they charged you an £80 call out fee though.

I would, as I'd rather spend my cash keeping my TV up to date than my Washing Machine. I've got an 18 year old vacuum cleaner, its still sucks like an 18 year old :D
