Can you get a 16mm masonary drill bit that tapers down to fit a 10mm chuck? Ideally a ~400mm long one to go through a house wall.

I got one from B&Q this week that claimed to fit all drills and wouldn't fit any of the three drills we had to try.

Only got one hole to drill, so don't really want to have hire something for five minutes use...

I got one of these fron B & Q a couple of weeks ago, it said it was an SDS one. It fitted the drill alright, SDS part on the package was good for when it went back as "I've bought the wrong one"

"Oh, have a full refund then"

ok, so you want to drill 16mm hole through a wall through the side of the house with a 2p drill that has a 10mm chuck :D

10/10 for optimism :D

My local ( oriental/indian) hardware shop sells packs of ( cheap **** ) long masonary drills with straight shanks, If I were you I'd get something like this, dont try and attack the wall with the 16mm straight off either, work your way up through the sizes.

..if its a cordless drill with 10mm chuck, book three weeks off work.

..if its a 240V drill with 10mm chuck, then this will be it's testemonial hole :D.

If I lived in staffs I'd do it for the price of the diesel..( 24V SDS with 600mmx16mm bit owner :p )

You *could* try and "hire" an SDS bit from B&Q, but don't be too dissapointed when they don't give you a refund, an SDS shank will fit in a 10mm 3 jaw chuck, but it will mash the drill shank with what you want to do, and what you have to do it with ;) . SDS is a completely different kind of chuck,Duck:D

Drilled hole through cavity wall last week using 16mm masonry bit with 18v cordless drill. No problem. Just use a good bit and a fully charges drill and it will take about 2 minutes.

I've already gone through said wall with a 400mm x 8mm on my trusty B&D cordless :p What's that I hear? Laughing from the pro's at the back with De Walts or Bosch SDS? :D

16 mm goes through a cavity wall fine with an SDS bit in a normal 240v drill, no damage to the chuck.

i don't use my dewalt,as much as i use my power devil. the power devil takes quite a bit of hammer and has never let me down. if it gets nicked so what i have have not lost a lot (unlike when the sds makita went). i would drill a hole with the power devil of that size (although i would work my way up to that size)

So something like this will do the job?

Looks like what I used (although mine was longer ;-) ), went through in one, no need for a pilot hole.

Although ask the experts, maybe I was just lucky , or maybe my house is made from soft bricks or something

;-)
