Anyone bought one of these yet??

Just going to get mine now, I've read probably every review and finally had a play with one at the shop this morning, seems too good to be true for a grand.

Makes the EOS 300D feel like a toy.

Will give some feedback as soon as I get it charged up :D

Be nice to hear your opinions.
You've probably seen it but the most detailed review I've seen (with comparison pics with the D100 and EOS300) is at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond70/

Looks good but would be nice to hear from real world user...

I've got one :D

Picked it up last Saturday. Much prefered the feel of it to the Canon. Just need to play with it properly now.

N*ikon ? Get a proper camera, get a Canon. ;)

Seriously, would be interested to hear what you think. There were reports of colour shifts across images on early D70's, so hope you don't see any of that.

Cheers

I imagine with SLRs & digital technology these days, you really want to concentrate your cash on the lenses. ie, as soon as a 10MP or 15MP SLR comes out, you'll want to upgrade your body....

If Canon do this 3 years before Nikon, you're going to be champing at the bit as you're stuck with Nikon lenses....

I guess Canon do have the lead in terms of bringing out prosumer models to date, but the Nikon does look enticing....

Difficult choice.

AS far as I can see, its all about speed and response.

The canon takes some great shots, but there is just no comparison with start-up, focus and even shot-to-shot speed.

Also, the build quality is absolutely in another league. I beg any of you making this choice to go to Jessops or the like and handle them both at the same time (oo-er!) and you will see the canon is like 'my first camera' :)

I know if it does the business, that's a secondary consideration, but the Nikon seems to be coming out on top in terms of features too, although its closer there.

I'm just trying to get hold of Nikon Capture as it only comes with nikon view, so I can play about more with .raw shots.

Going to have a play this eve and take some test shots over the weekend before a trip to LA next week to test it properly :)

Yeah, don't get me wrong, the Nikon does look a step ahead in features and some other stuff.....and the plasticky feel to the Canon does bother me if I were going to buy one....call me a traditionalist, but a silver coloured plastic body doesn't look the part in some ways......prefer either all black, or black with the satin metal (ie, real metal) look. Tiny thing, but it helps :)

To be honest, when I bought my chemical SLR, I focussed (pardon the pun) on stuff such as fps, shutter speed etc....

Yet, even although I had it, I never used 4fps with chemical - probably because couldn't afford the d&p costs!! However, with digital, would be prepared to experiment a lot more, plus using bracketing shots feature (ie, 3 shots, 1 either side).

Isn't digital wonderful :D

Do post some examples - Scoobynet seems full of Canon folk (including myself!) so I'd be really interested to see what we're missing.

Since at this stage in DSLR evolution it's still really the lenses that are worth investing in and holding on to, do you have any feeling for how the Nikon lenses compare to their Canon equivalents in terms of optical quality, build and features?

imlach: FYI, Canon have recently launched (within the last couple of weeks) a black 300D for the Japanese market. It looks like a completely different and much classier camera. DPReview (http://www.dpreview/com) has details.

Imlach, yes, a microdrive and a digital SLR = experimentation heaven :D

Andy, I certainly will do. Hope to get some good shots in LA next week.

As for lenses, Nikon's proffessional background stands them in good stead for lenses. I had a Nikon 35mm SLR some time ago and the lenses even then were great, although not cheap. As the camera will take most of the Nikon series lenses, its got the edge, although canon have made a big splash in the 'prosumer' market with their lenses. I also admit to seeing a lot more pro photographers with canon's nowadays whereas it used to be all Nikon.

I can't begin to tell you what's wrong with that statement ;)

As far as I know, all Canon lenses will fit the 300d. Canon do have a professional background, believe it or not - the F1, A1 and EOS 1 were at least as good as the Nikon equivalents. And Canon are usually one step ahead of Nikon when it comes to the latest developments.

In my case, the decision to buy Canon was simplified by the fact that I already had several Canon lenses - however good the competition is, it makes no sense to change systems when you have already invested a lot of money.

I am sure that the D70 is a fantastic camera, but the Canon equivalent was released last year, so it would be disappointing if the new Nikon wasn't at least as good.

As for seeing "a lot more pro photographers with canon's nowadays", where have you been for the last 20 years? :)

Having said all that, I'm sure you'll take some great pics with the D70 and enjoy your trip to LA :)

(300d - it's a bit like a Scooby - punches above it's weight :D)

Yes I can totally understand if you already own a series of lenses its a no-brainer decision really.

However coming in from 'scratch' it was also a no-brainer to go with the Nikon, and having had a good play and read into the more advanced settings and features I can't see me needing to upgrade for a long, long while.

My comments about pro photographers is based on years of watching, and photographing, various types of motorsport. It used to be that everyone I saw had Nikon's for their speed, quality and robustness, but now I see more and more Canon's (usually A1's and EOS 1's) esp since digital SLR.

Here are a few shots from my first day with the camera. The light was not good as it was midday and cloudy, but I'm happy with the results. The white balance and exp bracketing is great, I'm particularly happy with the vespa shot which was pure luck whilst walking back to the car.

Nikon vs Canon is a bit like Scooby vs Evo - both have plus points and it depends on what you want from a camera as to which suits. For instance the latest Nikon D2H is surely to become the de facto standard DSLR camera for sports photography due to its build and speed not to mention 40 frames of continuous shooting.

Anyway if you really can't decide choose the Nikon as at least that way the 'man on the street' knows you've got a camera round your neck as opposed to a photocopier ;)

You've obviously not read up on the recently launched Canon EOS 1D mk II, then :D

Aye, expect every camera at the Olympics to be a 1D MkII (if they can ship them fast enough). ;)

Along with the 1200mm 5.6. Not a bad lens for £60,000!!!
