View Full Version : Photo competition - Round 6 - 'Sport' - Discussion
Wizzbang 08 April 2004, 20:46 The theme for round 6 is 'Sport'.
Photograph anything in and around the world of sport, from a crunching tackle in a sunday league football match to a rally car losing it on a tight corner and anything in between.
Last day for entries is 30th April. Three images per photographer
Entries should be posted in here (http://bbs.scoobynet.co.uk/showthread.php?p=3210867#post3210867) as usual with discussion here.
Good luck
AndyC_772 08 April 2004, 21:13 Cool :)
The first round of the BTCC is on at Thruxton on Sunday, so for anyone else who's there: I'll be the guy with the long lens and the long hair!
It's either that or my colleagues having a 5-a-side kickabout. Great footballers we're not :D
gregh 08 April 2004, 22:06 so is there a date when the programs must have been taken in between? got some great off-piste shots from skiing w/c 28th March
Wizzbang 08 April 2004, 22:11 Quoted from the rules in the entries thread
3. Image must have been taken within the competition period, which is from 9th April to midnight on 30th April.

Mr.Cookie 09 April 2004, 00:48 breathe sigh of relief that that's not allowed ;)
Nice wide topic choice Wizzbang :D
CrisPDuk 09 April 2004, 10:35 Sonic, is that on the barbados rally by any chance?
farmer1 09 April 2004, 12:38 Wonder if I can get any decent pictures of my Dad's Impreza "Sport" :D
MartinM 09 April 2004, 21:27 I can't believe that picture's not Photoshop'ped - there seems to be nothing in the near- middle- or far-ground in focus except the car, which is fantastically in focus from front to back. And all the tyres are far too sharply defined against the background
...but I'm happy to stand corrected ;)
AndyC_772 09 April 2004, 21:32 One word, Martin: 'Pan'.
The photo looks real enough to me - sharp car, motion blurred background, just as any good motorsports shot should be.
MartinM 09 April 2004, 22:44 One word, Martin: 'Pan'.
Ah, I forgot that ...not :D
Well, I've looked at it at 400% in Photoshop and I can't see any great evidence of pasting the car into the picture, apart from a vertical line just to the right of the RH side of the front bumper (as we look at it) where there are some discontinuities in colour - but there again, maybe the picture wasn't taken with a 1D ;)
But the more I (and the current Mrs MartinM) look at it, it just appears a bit too un-natural...
So getting nerdy.....
What direction is the car travelling wrt the camera?
If it's at right angles, then I'd expect to see some of the fore/background to have 'horizontal blur', but it just seem blurred to me
If it's straight on, then no panning would be required and, as the car is in sharp focus, the elements of the picture at the same distance as the car would also be in sharp focus - but they're not.
If it's in between and it was panned, I would still expect the background to be blurred in some 'directional' sense, but I don't see any evidence of that.
Maybe the car has been carefully masked in the orginal and then sharpened heavily so that it appears to all be 'in' the depth of field?
Anyway, still doesn't look quite right to me, and I'm sure it's had some sort of post-processing to make it look like it does - and I've also spent more time writing this than the subject deserves :D

Not been out on my bike much since getting the scooby :)

springbok 27 April 2004, 00:07 Posted 3 pics from this weekends Somerset Stages Rally.
I prefer the Hyundai, although it's not 100% in focus, still playing with panning to get that bit of blur in the background.
flat4 27 April 2004, 08:03 got a trackday to goto today, so i'll see what i can do :)
Sbradley 28 April 2004, 14:02 Out of the timeframe for this round, but would this have been acceptable?

Cheat! :D
Sbradley 28 April 2004, 14:40 Ah yes, but it doesn't say "photographer"
All that means is that I get a press pass to get to decent viewing areas...
OH OK I admit it. It's cheating. But there are too many good photographers on here - I have to even things up somehow :)

AndyC_772 28 April 2004, 23:22 My third and final effort is up too. Last day is Friday! :D
Sbradley 29 April 2004, 22:08 Duck_Pond, you should be ashamed of yourself.
It's Stirling Moss.
An appalling pun is one thing. A miss-spelled one is something else entirely...
SB
PS :D
Duck_Pond 30 April 2004, 09:06 It was deliberately miss-spelled!! A play on words, so to speak. As for being ashamed of myself... nah, done far worse things, and besides, I normally reside in the Muppets, so this is a rare outing! Just a bit of fun! ;)
