Having read this & other threads - I had to reply!
I have been road rallying for over 10 years - & before you start on me can I say that we arent all like 'Road Rally' - most of us are a bit more diplomatic & friendly!
Rallying IS going through a public relations problem due to the 'tesco car park brigade' who dont give a monkeys about whether the sport gets banned or not, but I dont think you come into this category. It is annoying when people purposefully follow the rally route to cause trouble - equally for competitors & marshals as they do cause PR problems etc - but as i say - I dont think you fall into this!
If you want to get into motorsport then you would be welcomed by any motor club in the country - maybe start off by marshalling, see what the navigating/timing side is all about & then do some events - its much more fun than just following!! Rallies cater for all levels - beginners to experts & all entries are welcomed. You do need to be a member of a club & have a competition license - & maybe a car that isnt worth as much as your imprezas to start with ;) As many a silly bugger whoopsy has happened to all of us :D
Please dont taint us all with the same brush - as we're nice really :cool:

Ahhh.. its good to see there are some reasonable folks in these motoring clubs.

I do apologise for sticking my nose in last night, but i couldnt believe what i was reading to be honest... i saw it as a direct attack at scoobynetters and hurling personal insults is bound to get peoples back up.

Seems as though Road Rally is quite simply a to$$er who has nothing better to do with his time than insult people and attempt to start trouble. :rolleyes:

Goodness, a thread about road rallying.

A few quick points before I go out to do PR work for the next event (run by Road Rally)

As with all forms of motorsport road rallying is fun, but it isn't quite what you'd expect. The best way to find out about it is to join a road rallying motor club and come along to help - we're always short of marshals.

Chasers are a pain in the bum for competitors and organisers - please don't chase rally cars because you won't be popular with anyone. Chasers frequently get in the way of competitors and often cause complaints from the general public, especially if they flatten walls and clear off without sorting out the damage. We've had to pay for walls damaged this way in the past and it isn't cheap.....

Road rallying is under threat at the moment and we do need to be very careful to make sure that it isn't banned - its just too much fun to risk that happening. Please help motorsport by co operating with us and avoiding disturbance so that everyone can have fun.

I did the VK Derbyshire Rally on Saturday night and we had to be diverted round the section where the chaser got stuck and blocked the road. This meant that the whole section was scrubbed, spoiling everyone's night and wasting the organisers work. Please try to avoid getting into this kind of situation as you won't be at all popular.

Lastly, Beware of Road Rally - he is a Lancastrian and cannot be trusted! Do not take everything he says seriously and do not let him wind you up.

The important thing is to encourage people to get involved and enjoy themselves without disturbing residents or causing problems for competitors.

Chasers aren't welcome, but enthusiasts are. And there's always room for more marsahals.

Road rallying isn't exactly what you might expect. I spent last night out doing PR work, putting letters though doors and talking to people in villages. Generally people are friendly enough, but there are some objectors about and if they protest loudly enough then sooner or later road rallying will be banned. One of the reasons legal road rallying survives is that it is seen to be better than the alternative of illegal events which run without PR and can't be held responsible for damage or disturbance. Sadly chasers blur this distinction to the point where legal events could easily be stopped.

Oddly enough, road rallying isn't all about speed - you need a combination of car, driver and navigator to make it work. This takes time and can't be solved simply by throwing money at it, as demonstrated by a new competitor who bought a Subaru last year. He's very fast, but this doesn't make up for the fact that they don't know where they're going! This kind of thing happens surprisingly often, as the Raeburns have shown by winning various events outright in their 1400 Metro, beating more than a few Subaru crews in the process.

I think I'd better finish with a quick warning to Subaru fans - rallying could damage your choice of car! I went to Mull last year for the Tour Of Mull Rally and joined up with some Subaru fans to spectate on the Dervaig hairpins. They started out only wanting to see Subaru's and couldn't understand why anyone would want to enter in a MKI Escort. By car 10 they were impressed by the Escorts, and by car 20 they were no longer Subaru fans...... ;)

Oh yes, I knew there was something else - Callum Duffy won outright. Flat out. On tarmac. In a MKII Escort.

The nearest Subaru was several minutes behind - great stuff! :D

I was at the VK with the intention to Marshal but to be honest was not equipped properly for the weather. In the end i parked up at the side of the road (not a road competitors were using) and watched all the cars come through. I never got in anyone’s way at all.

we have joined and we are looking forward to getting our teeth into it, i think I have found a car today, just called a guy aout a subaru justy, 1.2 II 3 door optional 4 wheel drive! cushty.... dont know if anyone else uses these or not? just got to see if we can squeeze a wrx engine in now though :D :rolleyes:

The Subaru's and Mitsi's used have to run in the production class and mod's are restricted to suspension, safety items and guards. A car running in the proper road rally class is restricted to single cam, two carburetta chokes (unless injection) but gearboxes , axles, etc are free. No changes to the silloette of the bodywork allowed (ie no arches) and unless a standard factory colour scheme the cars must be painted one colour.

just a standard scoob justy, presume ile just strip it and put a cage in it, and i can get hold of some impreza seats which "i presume" will slot straight in?

You can fit cage, harnesses, seats, guards, suspension, but If the justy engine has more than one cam like the impreza the engine must be left standard bar air filters and exhaust (watch out for noise). Interior trim including carpets, back seats and head lining must be retained.
Would be a good little car for Derbyshire events as they are always a bit rough, hence the reason we did'nt finish in the escort (got stuck on a grass triangle). GRP bucket seats are a good idea, Impreza seats are very heavy. I know where there is a WRX RA available for hire for road rallies.
