Default TD05 - Are they worth it?

I'm currently running around 280 - 290bhp on a UK97 with the aid of a Boost Controller full decat etc. I'm pretty happy but am thinking about upgrading the turbo from the standard TD04 to a TD05 unit. I suspect I should be able to break 300bhp.

I'm after reliability more than anything as its my daily drive. Is the difference noticeable and will I need to upgrade anything else? (fuel pump / brakes already done)

Comments appreciated.

Thanks

The TD04 and 05 are both reliable, rugged turbos. You will get noticably more power from a TD05 but this will be at the cost of spool a little higher up the rev range.

you will also need a remap of some sorts because the td05 may cause your car to run very lean on full boost.
if you only plan to run 1.1bar or less then you are prolly better of sticking with the td04.
spool up isnt that much further up the range, IIRC (Email from Andy-f, not my own work)

the td05 will not cause your car to run lean unless you have a fuelsystem not capable of keeping up with the demands of the ECU.

the ECU knows about all the extra air going into the engine when you use a bigger turbo, so changes in AFR shouldn't happen unless you have other problems.

Getting a remap is still preferred, but not essential, and proper monitoring of AFR and knock will soon tell you.

i can agree with this, although im not 100% on it

i blew my vf22 and stuck a td04 on as a stop gap and my fueling afr values havnet changed at all, it still hits the same values!! @ various boost preasures, ive settled on approx 1.25bar midrange for now as it seams much "crisper" then running it @ 1.3bar and above

i plan to fit a td05 when i find one thats not being sold for a scandelous price and not remap the car unless it is actualy starting to run lean and a fuel pump upgrade and such doesnt cure it

I purchased a TD05 a couple of months ago but I havent bothered to fit it due to mapping costs.

Is it possible that my current tek3 map will cope (std TD04, full de-cat, peak boost 17.5psi)? Obviously willl keep an eye on knock and AFR.

nope it will need something done to sort the boost out, recently fitted a tdo5 and got it mapped but was not that impressed ive since added an avcr and all i can say is get one

Be carefull The stock maps from Subaru are able to support turbo changes OK if you switch to some other form of boost control. In general they'll run a bit lean during spool up; I've never seen this to be dangerous, it's just hampers spool.

I'd recommend at least a knocklink though - if you changed turbo on a car with an under-reading MAF, then it would be dangerous where the stock td04 may not have been.

Be careful with any EcuTek'ed ECU. The "tek2" maps should also be OK, but it depends what changes the tuner who did the work has made to the default package (remember, tek2 doesn't really exist!).

Anything custom mapped to a particular hardware environment needs great care - discuss with whoever did the custom mapping beforehand

Richard

Edited to add: TD05 onto a stock ECU offers a good improvement in power, at the cost of later spool. However, I'd recommend an uprated fuel pump and not running more than ~1.1 bar held to the redline (assuming 440cc injectors on a phase 2 car - less if it's earlier or a new age WRX), which is around max IDC's you'd want to safely run. You can, depending on your set-up's capability to safely handle it, run more through the midrange - just make sure it tails off slowly after 5k5 or so......use your knocklink for fine tuning....preferably verify your knocklink with det cans first

Oh, boost level will also be dictated by fuel cut if you haven't fitted a lifter.....long time since I've done such "crude" tuning....still effective though

Susprised no one has mentioned this yet, speak to Rich Wild @ Jap Innovations, he runs a TD05 on a MY97 with the OEM ECU and a boost controller.

I have an MY98 and have run the car with the TD05 on both a Link and OEM ECUs using a MBC to control boost. TBH the top end on the OEM ECU was excellent, but the midrange was somewhat lacking compared what I could achieve with the Link.

Cheers Andrew.

Its Jap Innovations who are doing the work. The turbo upgrade was Rich's idea. I've got the HKS Boost Controller along with the Knocklink and its in next month for fitting.

Fingers crossed......................
