OK, I've not passed my test yet so I'm just sort of looking around, (test is in may so fingers crossed!... ) anyway, I'm planning to spend 3k on a car with a highish spec its got to be quick and low on insurance for an 18 yr old..

Everything seems to be off the rails on insurance, getting quotes like 9k for a 2.5k golf GTI, having a laugh..

Any ideas??

 

yes - get a smaller car that you can afford.

 

Get a 205GTi or something and insure it under your Dads name - thats what I did until I was 21 and insurance became a bit more realistic in my own name.

If you have 0 years driving experience and are 18 then theres no way you'll get a sensible insurance quote on something sporty in your name. Best bet might be just to get something cheap and cheerful and get some experience - build up some no-claims then look forward to something nice in a couple of years.

 

Do you think a vauxhal astra hatchback is a quick car?

2 litre what would the insurance be like?

 

just get a normal 205, spend a grand on the car then if the worst did happen, no worries.
Even the standard 205's are not slow and handle real well, and cheap insurance.
Could even stick GTi gear on it.

Won't go straight in. the 205 uses the XU9 series engine which uses different mount points and the block and gearbox are much bigger than the TU engine fitted to the AX.

You can get them to go in, but you will have to do some serious work.

One engine that will go in with relatively small amounts of work is the Saxo VTS 1.6 16v unit. That is a TU unit and is of a similar size.

No one gets a fast car for a first car unless they have bags of money.

Get something cheap to insure and build no claims as it would seem you have already found out that insurance is going to be too high on anything GTi.

106 XSi 1.4, handle well, fairly nippy if you buy a pre-cat model and they're cool. I had my VTS at 18, never did me any harm

you wont get cover without selling them your **** on anything that is:
a) over 1.6
b)has letters such as 'gti', 'vts', 'rs' etc
c) has a turbo
d) remember you'll have to sell them your **** for anything at all even if its a micra.

i would recommend something along the lines of a saxo westcoast with the vt* kit on it. fun, cheap to insure and you can badge it as a vtr so you have a little bit of 'cred'.

 

You really shouldn't be looking at *any* sporty type cars till you're 25 (or 21 if you've got money to burn on insurance). I know its a real pi$$er,
but its just the way of the world at the moment especially with the insurance. Buy a 1.1 shed and run it for three years to build up some no-claims. There is absolutely no point in throwing your money at an insurance company for your first 3 years behind the wheel - save the money and get something decent later.
When I first passed my test I was in a similar position to you - I just wanted a fast motor. I finished up driving a 1.3 mk.3 escort for 4 years then bought my first pride and joy - a 1985 XR3i It was worth it in the end. You just have to be patient !

 

How about getting a kit car (assuming you have a bit of technical knowledge)? You could then take it onto the track

 

My new instructor has a pug 30(?) 1.1 litre petrol and you just don't know how slow it is! It's painfully slow and takes the fun out of driving

I know its not a good idea to get a sporty car as my first, maybe an astra hatch will have to do...

 

There's no point in trying to insure it in your Dad's (or Mum's or Auntie's) name - they won't be able to use existing NCD as it'll be a different car, and as soon as they put you on as a named driver (assuming same address too) the premium will be no cheaper. If they lie and say you're not the main driver, you'll be screwed if/when you come to claim - the assessors aren't stupid. Even if you think you're only losing £1k if you're 3PF&T, if your insurance is invalid, a 3rd party could end up suing your ar$e off.
Like the others have said, put up with a shed for 3 years until you're 21, build up some no-claims and then get something better. I spent my first few years in a Yugo 45, Citroen C5 van and a 900cc VW Polo. Friends with money to burn on faster cars (the GTis etc) usually ended up in hospital having wrapped the thing round a tree in the middle of the night.

My first car was a 1.0L VW Polo saloon.
It wasn't a supercar, but insurance was ok.
Kept it for 2 yrs, then bought a BMW 318 and had it for about 4 yrs.
Now have a MY98 scoob, but also have 6yrs NCB.
That's how I can afford to insure it.

 

buy a hillman imp. hilareous little car and dirt cheap to run/insure. Just find a good condition one.

 

I don't know if this will be valid anymore but when I was in the same boat of having passed my test and had cash for the car but not for insurance I actually called the insurance company and blatantly asked them what they recommended in terms of fun to drive yet relatively cheap to insure............the guy searched for ages for me, in the end his answer was a Cavalier SRI !!!! (This was about 12 years ago I might add)
