View Full Version : HELP! Defi Defi-Link Meter BF gauge wiring

I have had a set of Defi-Link Meter BF gauges (& Control Unit II) fitted. After installation, the gauge lighting only came on when the car lights were switched on (not much use looking at the black faces in daytime driving!). The fitter moved the white wire from the Control Unit II from the red wire of the radio wiring harness to the orange wire of the radio wiring harness and the illumination then came on with the ignition, regardless of the state of the car lights.

While this is satisfactory (although a bit too bright at night), I have since discovered that there should be five degrees of gauge brightness for car lights off and five degrees for car lights on, controlled from the up and down buttons on the Control Unit II. In their current wiring state (white wire to orange wire), the gauge brightness cannot be controlled. Does anyone know how to enable this feature? Would the original wiring (white wire to red wire) enable the gauge brigtness to be controlled, for example?

Thanks, DRB.

I had a look at that, but I'm still not sure, probably beacuse of the translation from the Japanese!

Under the 'Wiring the Control Unit II' section, it says: 'white wire-illumination ... connects to 12V wire when small lamp is on'. I wonder whether this means that it only works when the car lights are on? I would give it a go, but I don't want to continue to shorten the wires by trying all the options...

Also, e-mail Defi in Japan. They are VERY helpful, especially if you describe the prob in full.

You have pluged the gauges into the wrong port on the control unit put it into meter input 2 not meter input 1 !!

Its the black one BTW

Thanks, Tal.

Yes! Nice one! That makes all the difference. I can now adjust the brightness level of the gauges.

The only remaining issue is that the gauge lighting doesn't have different brightness levels for 'lights on' and 'lights off' (as claimed in the Defi operating instructions). The brightness remains the same regardless of whether the lights are on or off. Have you any idea whether reverting to the original wiring (white wire from the Control Unit II to the orange wire of the radio wiring harness, rather than white wire from the Control Unit II to the red wire of the radio wiring harness, as it currently is) would give me the two modes?

Dont know but it makes sense to wire it up as per the instructions

You're right, Tal. I think I'll wait until the weekend, though. Many thanks.
