Has anybody done a driveway in wooden decking or seen one done ??

Obviously it would require a slightly different approach, but I think it must be do-able ???

I don't think it would last long, it'd obviously need to be better supported for a car or two to drive on, and I reckon the tyres would scrub the timber away pretty quick too, I don't think it would stay looking good for long!

I can see some issues here - main one is that to stop it going black you are going to need to put about 20 coats of varnish on it - this will repel tyre marks to some extent, but also turn it into a teflon driveway - make sure you get some buffers at the end......

TBTH - The negatives outweigh the positives tenfold - premature wear, tyre marks, discolouration, built on railway sleepers v's - something different?

I was thinking of railway sleepers, at approx £10.00 a sleeper (bulk) would this work out cheaper per 2/metre than block paving ???

Railway sleepers are full of an oily type substance which seeps out. This will carry through the house on your shoes etc. Not a good idea.

you can do two finish concrete parallel runs about 24-30 inches in width each. construct them about 500mm deep and wider at the bottom, put 19mm irons in crossways (bridging between) to help stop them drifting apart over the years. make them far enough apart-measure an mot ramp for dimensions. lay your deckin across, mechanical fix to the dried concrete and screed level in between or put loose shingle (not too small as tyre will spit it everywhere)

what length are the sleepers? Ones I used in the garden are 12 ft * 9 inches, which works out as exaclty 1 sq yard. I got block paviers before Christmas for £12.00 a square yard, but you will probably have more wasteage with sleepers, so the cost will be similar.

BTW - Shifting a block pavier on your own is easy - shifting a sleeper is not :D

As above - the sleepers I put in the garden are covered in some sort of oil which seeped out for 2 years and killed all the grass near it

sorry,no pics im afraid......youll have to kind of imagine.

There would be several ways to a drive the way u want, just got to decide budget, how much graft u want to do first etc...

Are you mad! For a start, your wood would warp over time, look tired and to be honest would look like a well worn bloody pier! Sleepers amongst your normal timbers would look like an afterthought. Your better off choosing something romantic like slate if your after a moder look and feel.

If you have to have the wood effect, I think the key is to have the bit the tyres not run on wood. Either stone/concrete, chippings or metalwork.

Would it be raised above the ground or just layed on to the surface?
