Just wondering if it's possible to glue metal to glass or a mirror...
If so how would one go about doing it?
Cheers,

View Full Version : Gluing metal to mirror Plums! 04 February 2004, 11:11 Just wondering if it's possible to glue metal to glass or a mirror... If so how would one go about doing it? Cheers, Plums. Guzzit 04 February 2004, 14:02 It depends how good you want the bond to be. There's a good range of 'super-glue' (mostly Cyanacrolayte) type products which will do the job quickly & easily. A quick wipe over the bonding surfaces with a solvent is recommended to remove any grease - best to avoid skin contact after degreasing. If you want a longer term and more robust bond try two-part epoxy adhesives. RS Components have a decent range to choose from & have a countrywide store network. Local DIY stores might also stock these. You need to take extra care with surface preparation though. Lightly abrade each of the bonding surfaces with fine emery paper or similar followed by solvent degreasing. You need to make sure that both parts of the adhesive are mixed thoroughly, i.e. when you think it's mixed, do it some more. Again you need to avoid skin contact once degreased to ensure no contamination of the bonding surfaces. The main difference is that the epoxy adhesives will take longer to cure than the 'super-glues', are usually more resistant to chemical attack & are more durable. You will need to keep light pressure on the parts whilst the adhesive cures. It would also be worth masking-off the areas adjacent to the bond to avoid any excess adhesive coming into contact with areas that you don't want it to. Good luck. PS. Forgot to mention that you should avoid skin contact with both types of adhesive for health & safety reasons. Plums! 04 February 2004, 19:55 That was just the kind of response I was looking for! Many thanks, Plums...... Guzzit 05 February 2004, 13:46 No probs. |
