View Full Version : Re-tiling my bathroom - tips? how to?

For a while every time we use the shower the water leaks into the kitchen below so I decided to attempt to re-seal the bath.

However, the plastic seal that fits to the bath has about 1 inch of plastic going behind all the bottom level of tiles (if you see what I mean its like an L shape going up behind the tiling). Not realising this was the case, I managed to take out two tiles before noticing what was happening :(

So, I've now got to replace the seal around the bath and replace the lowest level of tiles around the bath. I take it I can get away with just the bottom tiles and not redo the whole lot?

My main concern is removing the lowest tiles without damaging the 2nd tier and also how to remove the adhesive behind the tiles in order to put new adhesive on for the new tiles.

Any help appreciated. If it helps I will try and sort out some pics tonight. If I have to get someone to do it I may have to sell some Scooby bits to pay for it so want to do it myself.

first cut out all the grout around the lowest tier of tiles. You can get a tool for this in B&Q for a few quid, its got a serated edge so it digs the grout out.

Next I would gently tap the tiles from the bottom up with a bolster chiesel and hammer. If you cannot get access then take a hammer and tap each tile in the centre until it cracks then you can tap it off from the centre out.

Its important that all the grout is removed as if there is any left then the second tier will pull off when you take the bottom tier off.

Before putting a new sealing strip on make sure the surface is sanded flast-ish ready for the new tiles/sealing strip

My uncle fits baths for a living and swears by these sealing strips. Make sure you run a bead of clear silicon under the strip so that it bonds to the bath. Also make sure the strip is under a little compression with the bath so that the silcone bonds well. If you turn the strip over you should see a channel for the silicone.
