can anyone tell me how to get to the side light on a classic UK scooby (MY98) please. I read on an old thread that it's just one screw to get to it, but can't tell which one. there is an obvious long screw sticking out towards you, but it doesn't seem to come out.
Any help would be appreciated.

It's the lower outer screw/bolt of the foglights, which can be got at with a socket on an extension, 10mm IIRC.
Then the sidelight just comes away from the car, it's only located by a lug at the rear.

Take it you mean the sidelight next to the headlight. I f so its just one screw, then pull away from the car in a sideways motion and its as easy as that. Heres a pic of the crew that secures the sidelight.

Once you remove the screw as per Coulster's photograph you might
find the light doesn't move. You will need to pull or push the
light towards the front of the car as the trim around the light can stick to the bodywork. This can be harder than it looks.

Coulster, I am also having trouble removing the side light so that i can fit a new bulb. I have undone the screw as in your picture but the light does not want to come out. If i am standing at the front of the car should i be pulling the unit towards me? Any advice much appreciated.

Yes, pull the light towards you. The light is held in-place with a plastic ball & socket connector on the rear of the housing as well as that little screw. For some unknown reason the passenger side usually comes out quite easily where as the drivers-side can be a bit of a PITA.
I found it easier to crouch behind the light next to the wheel and gently (but forceably) push the housing forward. You should feel the ball pop out of it's socket.

Do pull/push straight towards the front of the car, or you risk snapping off the ball from the sidelight.
If you do, (I did:(: ), just repair it with araldite etc.
When refitting, put some grease on the ball and the socket, place ball on socket, align light, and rap it smartly into place with the heel of your hand.

Exact same process m8; it's just a right barsteward to move. Don't know why (uses the same little screw and ball/socket as the other side), but it's the same on every classic Impreza.
Just keep at it and it will pop out. Just be careful not to use too much force.
