It'll be alright

My wife tries to wind me up by telling me about near-misses.

Unhappy

Just got a vmail from her indoors.

"Tried to start the car this morning and the first two attempts it merely whined and nothing happened"

"Then I tried to start it again and it made this sort of half-hearted bang, even tho' I didn't turn the key"

And here I am at work unable to go and find out - torture

I need therapy and support

I hope this isn't serious - its worrying me now!

Does your wife do the odd wind ups then?

I had a similar experience with the Cossie - it was the Clutch - but the bang happened before the whining noises!

David,

Here's hoping it's something obvious and harmless. Empty fuel tank or maybe alarm immobiliser fuel pump cut?

At least it won't be anti-lag related, so that's a load of your mind.

BTW, how was she trying to start the car without turning the key? Does the link have a sexy start button to override the key?

I hope it isn't serious either!

I'm distressed AND I have to work late.

Mechanically unsympathetic Trundle can't give me anymore useful info and has taken the mobile sofa instead.

R

PS I actually think it was a jammed starter gear - which is why it whined when turned over, 'cos it is clear the engine wasn't turning over, just the starter motor.

I think the bang/clunk was it unsticking and but the noise put Trundle off having another go at starting it

PPS It had already started and run fine this morning

Red face

Hi Rannoch,

I had a similar problem a couple of weeks back. Had the car for a year now and it's always started first time - even in the depths of winter up here in Scotland.

I tried to start the car and it just wouldn't fire up. I left the car for about 10mins and tried again, but nothing happened. The starter motor kicks in and you can hear the engine trying to fire up.

I eventually kept the key turned for about 30 secs before it started to catch. A dab or two of throttle then started her up.

I've no idea what was wrong. It wasn't a cold morning, but it could just be some moisture on the points.

Hasn't happened again so I'm not too worried about it. Glad to hear you got your working as well.

Stefan

Rannoch,

Had a starting problem some weeks back (MY95), where engine would turnover but not fire up properly. Sounded like something horribly wrong with the HT electrics as car sounded really sick in a mis-firing sort of way.

Car was loaded onto a low-loader and carted off to the scooby dealer. Problem was that an engine temperature sensor had failed, involving replacement of a £25 part and an hour or so of labour to detect & rectify.

Good luck

Suresh

Hooray!

I came home early - I couldn't bear it - I am right, I do need therapy.

Thank you for all your kind words of support.

Anyway, I tried to start it and the engine cranked but did not start. MMMMMmmmmmm.

Like Orville I tried cranking for a little while, knowing that the fuel pump had primed and eventually it fired and ran fine.

Sounds like air lock in fuel system to me

It has started fine a couple of times since then and is OK.

Maybe I have done a bad thing when fitting my multiple little Broquets. 4x4, just like the Scoob

A happy man!

Sorry, Stef, don't think it's the Possum

I try & think of ways/reasons to ensure my beloved does not drive the car. Thats not because she doesn't know about the SS Cibies, Brembos, Prodrive geometry & new SO2s but because she is mechanically unsympathetic & shouts at ME for being OTT if I moan about scratches, scrapes & curbings etc. What really annoys me is when she puts her handbag on the roof & then drags it off Fortunately so far not happened to scooby but was the fate of the last car.

Rannoch

Glad to hear that everything is OK - I just had to get that off my chest just thinking about the other half driving scooby...
