Richard says

I would really like to thank everyone for their continued support - it means a lot to me. My fans, the Peugeot WRC team and also everyone at Prodrive and Subaru have all been tremendous. The doctors have advised that I am unable to get back in a rally car for the 2004 FIA WRC Championship and I have to accept that. I'm obviously extremely disappointed but I am feeling very positive and I am determined to focus all of my efforts on getting back to full fitness as soon as I can.

Richard has asked that people respect his and his family’s privacy in what has been, and will continue to be, a difficult period. Additional information will be given once Richard has completed the course of treatment referred to above.

Taken from World Rally news:
Burns shows signs of improvement
January 9, 2004
It is too early to say that Richard Burns has beaten the cancer that has suspended his rallying career, but the 32-year-old Briton has completed a course of radiotherapy and is said to be making good progress.

Burns blacked out at the wheel of his road car on his way to the Wales Rally GB last November and was diagnosed as suffering from an astrocytoma, a type of brain tumour. He is continuing to have chemotherapy at a hospital in London, after several weeks of radiotherapy.

“I would say he’s doing well at the moment. He seems to be responding well to treatment, but we’re in a wait and see situation. The main thing is he’s in good spirits,” his co-driver Robert Reid said.
