anyone know if this is an ok move?

Impreza has a 7 year no claims bonus, but I also drive a golf which I started building a new no claims bonus on last year.

A friend of mine who used to work for an insurance company has said that you aren't allowed two separate no claims bonuses. I can't for the life of me work out why.

I am the same, two cars with separate companies, one with 7yrs ncb and the other 4yrs NCB.

i thought it was legal to have two.

certainly when i wanted to use the same ncb on two different cars, they said "sorry, u need to start a second ncb on the second car and build that up from scratch". surely they can't have it both ways?

i guess it probably depends on the insurance company. maybe worth checking with the ombudsman.

I think your friend may have got his (or her) wires crossed! I work in insurance (although not the motor side), and am 99.99% sure that you're not restricted to just one NCB.

As someone's already said, a seperate NCB applies to each car you insure - the only exception being if you insure them on the same policy.

There is NO problem with having Two set's of Ncd, after all you've paid the insurance for the two vehicle's.

iv got two sets of ncd one for 9 years the other for 6 years

one good thing about getting old!

I used to have two sets of full NCB as it was cheeper for me to insure the wifes motor and mine. Ive now given her one set of NCB and she insures her own motor now with full NCB.

You can transfer Ncd to another person, but this person must be your spouse. Certain companies will have different criteria's as to if they will do it.

As Simb said I transfered one set of Ncd to the Mrs. This was with Direct Line. I didnt know you could do it untill one of their sale staff said.

You're right that you can't use the same NCB twice. However, some insurers will still take another NCB into account without requiring that they 'own' it.

For example, I have 7 yrs+ on my Scooby. My other car is a Westfield, which I bought about 18 months ago and it was the first time I'd owned two cars. My Westfield insurer asked me about my NCB on the Scooby and gave a discount accordingly. So, although I now have just 1 yrs' NCB on the Westfield, I still get a bigger discount that usual because my history on the Scooby is taken into account as well.

I think this is quite unusual, though - Westfields are almost always second cars, and it's actually quite hard to insure them unless you have a 'main' car as well. That said, they're also surprisingly cheap to cover - I pay just £300 fully comp, despite it being faster and more dangerous than, and almost as valuable as the Scooby, which costs me about £1000/yr. Go figure.
