Just bought some cheap lino for the kitchen (will do until kids and pup are older!).

Never layed any before. Need advice on how best to do it. Kitchen's 20' x 10' so not a small job!

Cheers in advance.

Can't help you but I need to know too.

I want to do the bathroom but there are loads of corners and awkward shapes such as the sink/loo etc.. I'm thinking that you make a template first?

Just found the B&Q diy help book i bought ages ago (forgot all about it!) £15.00 well spent!

Apparently for bathrooms you make one cut from the edge of the vinyl then a series of cuts down from either side of the first cut to make flaps until the vinyl sits flat. Then trim off to fit!

Easy as that!! ;)

Kitchen should be easier for me but we'll see! :)

Best of luck mate. I'd go for the B&Q book. Shows you how to do just about anything around the house. Certainly makes more sense than any Hanes manual ever did!

i've just put some down, what a nightmare, you think you've got it right and start to cut, then put it down and theres big gap,
someone told me to put the oven on so the lino is soft and its easier to cut, i had enough of a sweat on without putting the ruddy oven on :D

Good luck, i'll be thinking of you

Cheers for that Warwick.

I'll think I might get someone in.

Just finished doing laminate flooring in the lounge and hall and my knees are knackered. Wish I'd bought knee pads!!

Keep looking at the kitchen floor thinking - yep, must get this done - then I go off it. 20' x 10' could be frustrating in parts. We'll see what happens.

if you havent done it yet, then this might come in handy.
first leave the lino, vinyl in the room for a couple of hours with the heating on as the will make it supple and a lot easyer to fit.

with a sharp stanley knife, try and set it of the biggist wall, this will save time and effort,it would be usefull to buy some spray addisive.once its all in place and looks square, run the blunt side of the blade, pushing it into the corner of where you want to cut,now youve made a marker to where you want to cut, this is easyer depending on how thick the vinyl is.

once youve cut it all in,spray it all down around the edges.
after that to tidy it up silicone sealant[white] then seal the cut edges.JOB DONE
hope this has been a help

lol, It quite hard to fit lino, much harder than carpet! The best tip I can give you is to get a fitter to fit it, shouldnt cost more than 50/60 quid.
If you still want to do it yourself, try to cut off as much excess as possible, this makes it easy to work with. Then cut around the main corners of the room, leaving it up the wall about 200 mm. Leave it a few hours so it softens up, this will make it easier to cut, and take most of the creses out of it.
Take your time and think about every cut. Double check that if you cut the lino, you still have enough to reach both walls.
Hope this helps :)

The more I leave it the better sounding a fitter is. £50/60 could be a well spent 1/2 ton!!

Although, did a 14' square living room with laminate flooring in 4 1/2 hours the other day!

Maybe getting too cocky with the lino fitting!

Cheers for further advice though.

The problem is that if you cut it wrong you have just thrown money away. Its not like painting where if you do it wrong its cheap and easy to redo.

I am getting some new lino soon, but will get someone in to do it as if they screw it up i am not out of pocket. Plus someone who does it for a living will be pretty good at it so in theory should do a really good job.

I have fitted a few carpet tiles in a cupboard and that was hell of a lot harder than i thought. Took me ages to get them to fit.

Im a fitter mate, I fit everything. and lino is the hardest. you can stretch carpet, replace a board or tile on other stuff, but one bad cut on lino, and its bollocks!

Andy: Thats why I am getting a professional in for mine. Can't risk screwing it up. On the subject of fitting. My mate decided to fit his own carpet and didn't stretch it at all and it shows.
