View Full Version : Channel 4 tv coverage of WRC
S Page 20 December 2003, 18:40 I notice after reading motorsport news this week that channel 4 don't think not having any prominant British drivers in WRC will effect viewing figures, as in their words "there haven't been any british drivers in the forefront for sometime". They are yet to announce the tv coverage for next season but say that it should be along the lines of this year so we should expect the following:
Shows at 2-3 in the morning.
Shows starting early
Shows Finishing late
Shows being cancelled due to cricket over-running
Maybe an hours coverage of a 3 day event when taking adverts out of the schedule.
More ramblings from the commentators.
And maybe shows not even on the same weekend as the rallies if the viewing figures drop due to stupid airing times.
What do we have to do to get decent coverage of the sport???
johnfelstead 21 December 2003, 00:20 I suppose leading the championship all year isnt being at the forefront then.
Another bunch of muppets, do they go to a special school at the FIA to be so incredibly dumb or something?
S Page 21 December 2003, 11:44 It would appear not John.
I can't believe it when they say the rally coverage does not warrant primetime coverage due to poor viewing figures, especially when you look at some of the sh#t that is on at primetime. Just trying to think if there is anything else on C4 that i actually watch apart from rallying, strange nothing springs to mind?.
?
?
?
?
?
Ah yes scrapheap challenge.
Chungster 21 December 2003, 13:14 No idea what Dave Richards and his ISC are doing really when it comes to TV coverage of the WRC.
The plan from what ISC said last year at Rally GB, was to increase the coverage big time, and expand it to a level that will compete with F1 (I know what i'd rather watch!)
Maybe they should let a channel like Motors TV take over.
They've been doing live BTCC events etc this year.
I think they'd do a good job, and make sure WRC was covered and shown to the masses at the correct times!

16vmarc 21 December 2003, 15:33 I know what your saying, Eurosports coverage isnt any better.
PETENAUD 21 December 2003, 21:35 watch the brit rally on motors and think its bloody good.
No inane drivel by some imbecile going round the track on a quad bike trying to make it sound good.
Good shots from in the cars, no blurry mist like vision, apart from the thick fog by nature.
anyway, what wrong with the world curling championships!
Glamtax 22 December 2003, 00:05 JF I suppose leading the championship all year isnt being at the forefront then.
as far as C4 is concerned he was leading but not winning so no headlines but as you say Muppetts all of them , just don't get me started on Desbourgh ...!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Huxley 22 December 2003, 17:37 It's always going to be crap with Richards Involved in it images/smilies/mad.gif
It's all about money!!!
And not spending any of it to keep the Viewers Happy
Not a fooking chance of that !
Look at the Jacques Villeneuve and Mcrea Subaru saga the only reason they lost there drives is He doesn't like them images/smilies/mad.gif
I'll get off my soap box now
ANC 22 December 2003, 18:53 Villeneuve and McRae lost their drives as they both had
unsuccessful seasons and were not good value for money.
David Richards and ISC have lost money each year due to investing
in the TV coverage. I'm not saying its good coverage because 30 minutes at 2am will never be good but its better than it was a couple of years ago.
S Page 22 December 2003, 19:11 I'm sure i remember watching live coverage of rallying a few years ago on satellite, can't for the life of me remember where or when but i think it was on Eurosport (not the British Eurosport) and i was on holiday in spain or greece and it was on for a few hours not 20mins like here, just makes me think how coverage has deteriorated .
Trouble is every few months or so one of the motoring publications does a story on how technology is improving or has improved so that you can see live broadcasts etc but none of it seems to have filtered down to joe public yet.
I've said before that i would like to see a satellite channel have decent coverage of rallying and wouldn't mind if it was like a pay per view channel as long as you new that it would be quality coverage.
Huge 23 December 2003, 18:52 Bottom line is that it probably isn't the cheapest programme to make & unless a commercial channel can attract decent prices for its advertising slots within the programme, why bother?
IIRC many of the WRC advert breaks had a single advert (plus other crap relating to forthcoming C4 programmes) only, so clearly the programme isn't exciting potential advertisers. :(
IMHO of course...

S Page 24 December 2003, 16:45 And i notice in this weeks Motorsport News Dave Richards has said there will only be 3 rallies next season that will have live coverage due to the costs, apparently it cost over £500k for the live coverage of Wales GB. He is trying to encourage the tv companies to show an hour long program on the sunday afternoon/evening of the rally and Channel 4's program was apparently the model program schedule for all the other countries tv stations to follow this season just gone, but will not be next season.
I just don't understand why "Men & Motors" can have such good coverage of the British & Irish rally championships in comparison to C4's coverage of WRC.
RB5SCOTT 27 December 2003, 17:48 I know what your saying, Eurosports coverage isnt any better.
Because C4 have the rights to it so Eurosport can't show what they would want to or usually would.
Don't you just like it when a channel buys the rights and puts a sh1t program out so nobody else can show decent coverage
Huxley 29 December 2003, 14:34 And I notice in this weeks Motorsport News Dave Richards has said there will only be 3 rallies next season that will have live coverage due to the costs
Need I say anymore about the Crap showing of This years WRC rounds They are just not interested in Rallying because it's not going to be as good as the Football sh1t that’s shown every five minutes in your face images/smilies/mad.gif
The rights should have given to Men and Motors at least it might have been shown at a decent time and a bit more coverage!!!
