Are any borders etc legal to have on number plates? I was looking at some number plates on the constructor option in fancyplates.com and wondered if I can get away with the subaru border and name at the bottom of the plate. I don't think it's too in your face with the standard font.

As far as I remember as long as the font is the required size and spacings then you will be ok

I thought it was legal font and spacing. Number plate can be shortened if the number of characters allow for it, as well retaining the minimum spacing requirements.

3D characters are allowed as long as they are a legal font.

NO honeycomb backings
NO symbols on the left, other the Euro/GB one! (So no football teams, car manufacturers, etc)
NO borders
NO shadows

This is what I was told, but it would be best to check with the DVLA if you don't want to give the police an excuse to pull you over!

I was pulled for my number plates a few months ago. I had FONT 2 from the fancyplates website, with the subaru badge on the left hand edge. The rozzers told me the writing was too small so gave me a warning but when I asked specifically about the subaru badge, they said as long as the numbers and letters are the right height and spacing, they don't care about the badges.

Andy Tang's comments are right, but as long as your letters and numbers are okay, they'll turn a blind eye (MOT testing stations included).

Damn, I constructed quite a good plate too.
Think I'll play it safe then and just go for the text at the bottom of the plate.

Cheers Guys.

Had mine from here,

http://www.gtgrafix.com/

Standard size plate, standard letters with a silver border and scooby pic in the corner.
Had no problems at all.

There are a couple of pics in my gallery

I can confirm

Borders upto 6mm thick are LEGAL

Badges other than gb/sco/wales/ni/euro are ILLEGAL

3D text is LEGAL

Text at the bottom of the plate is legal if it states a company name eg. Scoobynet - would be LEGAL

Also remember most police officers do not know the correct number plate law, and that number plate law has NOTHING to do with speed cameras

got my plates from 'Fancyplates' - I have standard font/spacing but went for a slim red border and small Subaru logo incorporated centrally within the border at bottom of the number plate - to date have had no problems with said plates....I think its the non-standard font and spacing that catches the Blue light brigades eye ;)
