View Full Version : grain effect paint
cliff_vtr 19 November 2003, 10:49 Look at sprucing up the kitchen, I hear our kicthen cupboard doors are some weird non-standard size. Was thinking of using that grain effect paint stuff, maybe in beech.
Can anyone comment on it, is it any good, waste of time, easy to apply etc etc

SirFozzalot 19 November 2003, 11:12 Mate of mine has used it, quite hard to get even coverage, although after two coats it doesn't look too bad.
AudiMan 19 November 2003, 11:13 Used it once on some cupboard doors, fairly easy to apply, then use the grain effect tool. Looks quite impressive from a distance, close up the effect is not so good. Cheaper than buying new doors though !.
Try/practice somewhere it doesn't matter before you go full on in the kitchen.
cliff_vtr 19 November 2003, 11:14 The cupboard doors are flat rather than panelled if that will help?
Also did he paint the inside too ?

SirFozzalot 19 November 2003, 11:14 Re-read your thread and I think I talking about a different sort of paint. The one I was thinking of was the paint with grains of sandy stuff in it. D'Oh! :D
cliff_vtr 19 November 2003, 11:16 sorry i probably confused you the stuff i mean is the ronseal stuff, you put on 2 base coats then put on the beach top coat and use a combe tool thing to create the grain effect.

AudiMan 19 November 2003, 11:40 That's the stuff, non panneled doors much easier, don't need to do inside (unless you are really keen, good place to practice though !).

cliff_vtr 19 November 2003, 11:51 so would you say it will give a good finish or not. Don't want to use it if it will only look good after a few pints.

AudiMan 19 November 2003, 13:58 Cliff,
I think it looked quite good, but it only a cheaper way of changing the appearance of the doors, what's the cost £15 for a pack, got to be worth a test,
(careful which colour you choose, some can look a bit gaudy)
White was ok though.

alcazar 19 November 2003, 14:09 Thee ARE loads of places that will make doors to non-standard sizes, though, and at a reasonable price.
Alcazar
cliff_vtr 19 November 2003, 14:13 where will make doors and at what price ???
gonna retile the kitchen, and repaint, then want to change worktops and do something with the cupboard doors
Cliff
alcazar 19 November 2003, 15:58 Well, I only know of places up here, which is a bit far from Poole, even in a Scoob:D:
Try Yellow Pages, or www.yell.com.

cliff_vtr 19 November 2003, 16:20 ok cheers alcazar, unfortuneatly I have a saxo vtr which is not quite as fast as your scoob!!.
I am just looking into the kitchen, not tackling it till mid jan, so just getting some ideas.
Don't really want to pour vast amounts of cash into it.

I used it om my wardrobe in the bedroom. It's good stuff, cheap and easy to use. Do a test patch first somewhere, you may need to practice. Always stir the tin properly from the bottom and don't just shake it!!! The ingredients of thr first tin, sink to the bottom of the tin.
Good luck mate. Albert
cliff_vtr 24 November 2003, 11:15 cheers guys thanks for the input, I think I will probably give it a go as its cheap
