I have just installed a 2nd bathroom and have a problem that when the Cistern is filling up when the level has reached max I get a bang from the pipes. Valve I think is a TORSEN valve, I have installed the "medium" pressure reuducer (plastic spiral thing in the inlet) to no avail. I have had to turn the ballfix valve to virtually off to stop the banging. This now makes it loud filling up as the valve is stopping the pressure if I turn the ballfix valve to Max then silent filling is achieved but loud bang at end of fill. Is there anything I can do?

Hmmm. I guess you mean a 'Torbeck' valve? The ones with the 'bit of polythene pipe' for an inlet to stop water being syphoned back ('cos it collapses first)? Am I right in thining you have it on the rising main rather than the water tank?

I have one cistern on the main and that also is a bit noisy. Plus just fitted a 'silent' plastic float valve to the cold water tank and that also shuts off with a 'bang'. Hmmm. Still not sure how to get rid of it so I guess I haven't helped a lot ... but if anyone can I'd be interested as well .... :-)

At the risk of stating the obvious, this sounds like water hammer. It is allegedly possible to fix by bracing the pipe leading to it in the middle of any long runs - if you can get at it.

However, the easiest option, and the one I took on a toilet that did the samet thing is to just back off the mains pressure from the stop cock on the way in. There's still plenty of pressure for all my taps etc. This maybe wouldn't be an option if you have an electric shower, though, as they rely on decent mains pressure.

Yup thats the one. Rising main is where its plumbed to. Will try the High pressure reuducing dongle and see how long she takes to fill. Currently have it noise free (apart from the restrition on the ballfix valve)but it does take about 4 minutes to fill which I suppose is not to bad

Sounds like its from the main stop tap.very common.
theres probably a loose jumper inside the tap.replace for a fixed one,or a good plumber can sort it without replacing the jumper;);)

You need to switch water off in street to do it.
