I am about to start digging up the back mud bath.....I mean garden;) and am going to throw a load of gravel down. My question is how far does a tonne go (just your run of the mill red chips) ?
Cheers

Cheers Paul RB5320 13 November 2003, 10:34 You'd be better off measuring by the cubic metre ie length x width x thickness of gravel. You probably want a thickness of between 25 and 50mm. Once you have the volume, times that by 1.4 to give you a rough guideline as to the Tonnes required. Working it back the other way, 1 Tonne should do approximately 0.75 cubic metres. But it is a bit early for maths so dont take my word for it. If you give all the dimensions to the supplier they will tell you what you need. Steve RON 13 November 2003, 20:47 Best put some form of barrier down before the gravel, otherwise the mud will find it's way through!! hades 13 November 2003, 22:10 A ton (or a tonne, which is pretty similar, but more modern;)) doesn't go very far. IIRC from doing a relatively small area on my front garden, a rule of thumb is that a ton will cover an area not much bigger than a bugeye to 50mm ish depth. IWatkins 13 November 2003, 22:24 With 20mm gravel, I covered 12ft x 12ft to a depth of 3 inches with 2.25 tonnes, if that is any help. Put down weed proof membrane first though.
