I've just been quoted £1100+vat for a new multipoint gas central heating/water boiler and installation. That seems way OTT to me. I've seen boilers for £400 upwards- how much does it cost to fit one? This is for a small flat I rent out so it doesn't need to be anything fancy.

Plumbworld (http://www.plumbworld.co.uk) should give you an idea of what's available and what it costs. If it's just a straight replacement and no additional plumbing is required (eg as there would be if changing from system boiler to combi), a day's work should do it.
A few years ago, I had a complete heating system installed in a flat by two guys in three days.

Thank you very much- I've had a look and it seems someone is trying to rip me off!

Seems a fair price to me??
Plumbers and Corgi registerd installers dont work for nothing anymore.;)
Yep,you could go and get a boiler for £200 if you really wanted, but dont expect it to last very long. This thing gets used every day for years.Buy a decent make /model.We fit Worcestor and are very happy with the boilers and manuf backup.
Also, you just cant change a boiler now,you have to update the system if needs be.Make it into a fully pumped system with Zone valve/s,cyl stat, room stat, rad thermostats etc etc. This needs to be done to conform to Part L of the building regs.
Without updating the system,if the boiler did go wrong you might not be able to get it repaired because the Benchmark book wont have been filled in .

So £1100+ vat sounds reasonable? Thanks for that. How about if I just wanted the cheapest system possible? I'm not bothered about longevity as I intend to sell the property. I just don't want the tenant to be without hot water in the short term.
Out of interest would you be able to give me a ballpark figure of how much I'd expect to pay a CORGI fitter for a days work, I don't expect them to work for peanuts but if I specify a cheap boiler (£500inc VAT) then I don't think £750inc Vat is fair for a days work to fit it, is it? If £750 is OK for a days work can you tell me where I sign up to train as a gas fitter- I get less than that in the oil industry and I don't mean I working in a 24hr filling station!:D

Yup i bought a boiler myself for about £450 (same as you, i was selling so didn't matter) and got a corgi guy to fit, charged me about £200 and took a day.

Nacro...what you have been quoted seems a fair price if a decent boiler is used eg.Vaillant or Worcester Bosch, use a crap boiler and you could knock £300 off. Just remember you get what you pay for...peanut and monkey syndrome.

I'd agree that the £1100 quote is OK for a decent boiler... My new boiler + bits cost about that on it's own... (for a 3 bed town house)
The trouble I found with supplying my own boiler was that some of the local Corgis don't want to fit it, as they haven't supplied it.
(Or else when I tell them what I want doing, they say "ooh, that's difficult - I don't want to do that!" and then won't even come round to have a look - that's another story though.)
It must be nice to be in the position of being able to turn away customers or treat them badly - and still be in business...
Fortunately, there are still some reasonable gas fitters about :)
Edited to add: B & Q are having a sale on gas boilers ATM - might be worth a look... Not sure on the boiler quality.

Thanks for that I'll look at B&Q's website- as I say I just want to make sure the tenants have hot water until they leave then I'm flogging the place, a cheap one it is.
