My Wales Rally GB 2003 pictures... (http://www.milleners.eclipse.co.uk/wrgb2003/web/index.htm)

...still proof quality though and my web page creation software seems to mangle the quality down to something pretty horrible when compressing them from the originals

I think I've almost got the knack, but the car photos are a bit on the boring side.

[big head mode]
I think that there's probably 3 to 5 from the full set that could go into brochures/glossy mags - but please tell me if I'm day dreaming about that
[/big head mode]

What I really fancy for next year is:
- to know which are the best stages places for action photos - and where in the stages in particular
- a relationship with McKlein (some hope!) and or other people that employ freelancers or a photo library, which may lead to...
- a 'media' tabard, so I can go (relatively) wherever I want to

Any idea on 1) and how to achieve 2) and 3) ??

Regards
Martin

You see your picture of the yellow and white Team Palmer Opel Corsa. My Dads mate works as a mechanic for them.
Thanks for taking the picture MartinM.

...just the mechanics cleaning up after Tommi's car had left the service area - general mud and cr$p they clean off from the arches and underneath, old tie-wraps etc etc. They then pressure wash the yellow mat and squeegee the water off so it's dinner plate clean for the next time he comes back to service :)

Top pics Martin.

Keep chasing your dream mate, it`s not what you know.....

I have been trying to get into rallying for a few years now. Not wealthy enough, early enough to be a driver. Not got the mathematical ability to become an engineer. I work all day and send out e-mails all night to see if there's room for a Network Engineer in the sport.

Rallying is what I love, what I live for so I continue.....

You obviously have the eye, you just need to pukker up and get kissin.

Best of luck Martin, hope to see your name in XS soon.

Sorry mate - there's a bit of confusion here;) I don't have a 602 - this is all from Canon digital SLR stuff:D

I don't really know anything about the 602 - a quick scan of dpreview shows that it is well-featured and gets good overall marks.

If you've got any general q's, feel free to email - otherwise, for the action pics, I'd just:
- stick it on about 1/125 in shutter priority mode
- pan the cars very smoothly when they are from 45 degrees to the right of you, to 45 degrees to the left (or whichever way they're going;))
- keep the shutter button down all the time (5fps?)
- hope the autofocus is quick enough ;)
- and then choose the best 1 or 2 from the burst and post-process lightly with Paintshop/Photoshop/whatever

For the service area pics, there's nothing better than big glass (telephoto or wide angle) with nice big apertures (small f numbers) to throw the background pleasingly out of focus.

Some of my action pics are the best 1 of the 20 that I took as I panned the car - yes, the camera does a very good impression of a machine gun for 2.5 seconds:) Oops - that's one of my secrets out of the bag:D

Martin

An excellent set of photos, dont understand your technical instructions but i hope i can get as good shots from my new sony digital cam that i've bought ready for next year. Your shots will definately be on my desktop for a while. Have you thought about getting some published?? they deserve it.

Very nice pics Martin. I really struggled this year - apart from Friday when I got a few nice shots, I think I found the limitations of my Fuji camera and really started to appreciate why the pros have those bloody great lenses!

I'll try and post a few up soon - not up to your quality. Think I need to invest in a digital SLR.

Hi MartinM,

Any chance you can tell us what hardware you use (i.e. which Canon bits)? Also, how much memory have you - must be a lot if you're shooting ~20 at a time ?

Cheers.

As you've asked explicitly (the first one to do so;)), all these images were taken with:

Canon EOS-1D
Canon 70-200 F2.8L
Canon 17-35 F2.8L
Canon 550EX Speedlite flash
Transcend and Ridata 256MB CF cards - take about 100 jpg images per card, and I delete often between cars
Adobe Photoshop 7

Without doing a careful count, I'd say I took home about 550 images across two days (Fri/Sat) - and I've rejected about 350 of them for either technical reasons or they just look like 'snapshots' rather than 'photographs'...if you see what I mean

I probably took, and deleted in camera, another 100 or so. Good job it's digital:D

So, about a 1 in 3 keeper ratio - I don't know if that's high or low to be honest, but it's certainly higher than when I had a D30 (more like 1 in 10, or even worse)

Regards
Martin

MartinM was just dying to tell us what he had :). Nice gear mate & nice pics. This reminds me, I must get off my lazy a$$ and post my pictures. Didn't get so many shots this rally, took more videos. I see that someone with a fuji was ready to throw it away - which model is it?

I've had my Fuji S602 for a while, still learning, but am always keen to share what I've learnt about this camera. I've seen comments from other 602 owners on this board as well.

Martin, amazing pics, honestly! Are you really saying you don't have a job as a motorsport photographer because you do have the ability and talent. I know a media guy who knows everybody in rallying and also a freelance motorsport photographer (sportscars) if you like I can try and get some contacts for you.
