View Full Version : Some more pics - only 4 this time!
OdD KiDS OtHeR MatE 11 September 2003, 16:18 I've really enjoyed your pic's too! I was at the rally Thurs / Fri but didn't have either a digicam or a decent zoom for my 35mm. I hope to have some good pix from the service centre tho!
Thanks for postin them!
Roll on next year :D

Dead right mate - well spotted:) I sometimes, tweak it (a little) in Photoshop afterwards.
It certainly helps the 'instant effect' and I think rally cars (as a subject) can take it - doesn't work for people pics to well though!
Having said that, a decent digital SLR and a quality lens will give proper exposure levels that bring out the full colour spectrum better than a cheaper P&S - it's a bit like hifi in that you need a good signal to start with, whatever bells and whistles your amp has got.
I shot all these in jpg mode - but I could have got even better dynaimc range had I shot in raw mode - but that means less photos on a CF and several hours post-processing on the computer
You say you 'want one' - a photo or the camera?
If the former let me know, if the latter get yourself down to you local Canon Pro centre (or a high'ish end camera shop) and get yourself one - they've just been significantly reduced in price - :( for me, :) for you!
Martin

legacyb4 09 November 2003, 13:14 Great pics, Martin.
Looks like either you were standing bloody close to the cars, or that's some mighty long lens you are shooting with!
What shutter speed were you shooting at?
Cheers.

Excellent pictures mate!!!
Regards,
Shaun.
MartinM 09 November 2003, 13:46 Maybe 40yds, or so, from the cars...
Shutter speeds 1/100 to 1/160, or so, but obviously lots of panning
Zoom lens 70-200mm, plus a 1.3x effective multiplication from the camera...
...and a bit of cropping in Photoshop - which has the same effect as zooming in further of course.
I actually found these really hard to take -
- the top cars are going pretty damn quick when they're parallel to you at such a relatively close distance
- you've got probably less than 2 secs from when they appear to you get them in the viewfinder and the camera to get and start tracking the focus,
- you don't get a second chance - unlike a circuit race where you might have 30 opportunities to get it right!
..but there's a few other secrets to getting them as well!
MartinM 09 November 2003, 13:59 ..oh and the apertures are around f2.8 to f3.5 as it was a bit gloomy, which gives a depth of field of (I don't have my DOF calculator handy!) less than a metre I think...
...on the fourth picture, I think the focus point is actually on Tommi's helmet inside the car. As the car is at an angle in the picture, that is why the stickers on the front and back are strating to be a bit out of focus...I *don't think* it's motion blur
So the difference between a great picture and one not worth posting is a focus accuracy of a couple of %. I continue to be amazed that the autofocus on the camera can actually get it that right so quickly
skelly 09 November 2003, 15:18 Brilliant photos Martin. I've got a Fuji Finepix 602.....looks like I had better get practicing, not managed to get shots like that yet. Well done.

Diesel 09 November 2003, 18:58 Colours are SO saturated - very nice! Do you tweak the saturation up above what the eye sees on a grey Welsh day? Also how many pixells res? Basically I want one ;)
MartinM 10 November 2003, 10:25 btt - for the broadbanders at work :D
