My dad has just had a carpet fitted but the room was 3 inches wider than the carpet. The problem is they put the join at the entrance to the living room not against the back wall.
The thing is the join is quite obvious. Is it possible to have a join that is pretty perfect,ie you cant see.
Any advice/experience.

If not his only option is to complain and try to get it replaced with the join against the back wall.

yes you can join a carpet so you cant tell, but like with anything you get what you pay for, if the carpet is plain with no pattern and is not specifically a woven or fancy carpet you can join it anywere and not know, but if you are an experianced fitter and care about your work you would allways choose to make the join in the most out of the way place.
i would have to complain.

It is a plain carpet, but was quite expensive.
Because of the room shape the join near the door is only two foot long, but being at the entrane,in a prominent place.Against the far wall would have been bnetter, but the join there would have been 19 ft long.
If it can be hidden that may be acceptable,if not it will need a whole new carpet.

Around the door area will have a very heavy wear area. Not the best idea. Was the fitter subcontracted by the carpet shop??
Sounds to me like a cowboy job.

My grandad was a carpet fitter in the days when carpets didn't come in today's massive widths, so he always had to make joins. He was a real craftsmen and the pieces were sewed together so you'd never see the join.

many years ago in my aunts house..we took up her old carpet. It was very nice quality but a bit manky....We found it was made up from long strips all about 4 foot wide. This carpet had been down since the war..... and none of us had a clue. It was a work of art.

Luke.i think is was a subcontractor, were they cowboys?,tbh the rest of it has been done very well. Its just this one decision, they were young so it might be inexperience.
Cliff..the room is 13'3 wide, widest they do in this color is 13'.
Mungo....tbh i think this may be the answer, get the shop to get some professional/expert to do a really good job on the join.
Does anyone know of/heard of anyone/company who are experts at this sort of job?Its only a doors width.

Carpet fitters joined my plain twist pile, and did a top job,i know its there but still have to search to see it. They used a special tape and a hot iron, but didn't see how they cut it so straight. They say woven or looped piles don't join as well.

Had to have a join down one side of my carpet and I really can't see it at all! Top job! http://www.scoobynet.co.uk/bbs/images/icons/icon14.gif :D
