View Full Version : When will this sham return to being a proper rally?
CiaraC 11 February 2003, 19:20 Thats probably why it is not called 'Rally of Great Britain' anymore LMAO. Any rallying is better than none in my opinion, if the UK lost their round of the WRC you would moan even more so come on tell us whats better, a round in south Wales or none at all ?????? I don't however agree with the prices but if I want to go see it I will have to pay it simple as that.
It is simply not viable to have the route or structure of the old RAC

rally_al 11 February 2003, 20:13 As many rally fans are aware the, the Roger Albert Clarke rally should return to the original RAC Rally format, but not with the latest cars or as part of any world championship (see other threads about the reasons for this).
If you want to see the latest WRC technology, and best drivers in the world, on the best prepared stages, come to Wales for the Rally of Great Britain.
If you want to see a test of classic rally cars and amateur drivers and teams on other classic rally stages around the country, support the Roger Albert rally. Next year the WRGB is in September, the R.A.C. is in November. Support them both.
Don't drag out the moans about only being in South Wales, it's been the same for a few years now, and the will be for more to come until the rules are changed.

flat-in-5th 02 November 2003, 17:29 This event cant justify its title of "Rally of Graet Britain" when it is restricted to a small corner of South Wales!
This isnt a proper International Rally anymore, and the quality of the driving and competitiveness (outside the top 10) has nosedived along with its mileage!
It is now a poor imitation of the event that it used to be!
It doesnt surprise me at all that the organisors encounter spectator, traffic and congestion problems when they concentrate all the (limited) action in just a few sqaure miles!
Scoob99 02 November 2003, 18:51 Couldn't agree more, what with rip off ticket prices as well, what has happened to the good old RAC or Network Q sadly, I will not go to this anymore as it is a rip off, It's not as if the extra money people pay has gone towards better facilities for spectators has it.
Cheers
Colin
flat-in-5th 02 November 2003, 21:13 just coz the rally is **** now and has been for years, doesnt mean it has to be **** for ever!
Jonny__5 02 November 2003, 21:50 having witnessed a few September time rallies in south wales you realy want it to rain before for at least a few days or you won't be able to see a bloody thing because the dust is dreadfull.
stiffler-doo 02 November 2003, 22:01 I agree I remember in the not too distant past the RAC rally being 5 nights and days of hard driving in all conditions, now that really was a test of man and machine. Today all the WRC events are now what I would class as sprint events and pale in comparison. I still rejoice in the sight and sound of the Lancia Delta s4, Audi sport Quattro, and all the other Group B cars charging through the forests of England, Wales and Scotland. How I long a return to those days, but its not just confined to the WRC but also the British Championship which is also a shadow of its former self.
CiaraC 02 November 2003, 22:15 I take it you won't bother going then flat_in_5th ??
Chris L 02 November 2003, 22:16 Nothing ever stays the same. We also want to go back to the 'good old days'.. Sometimes we can't. A lot of the changes are due in part to FIA regs. There is no rally on the WRC that now covers massive distances in between stages. I think all rallies now re-run the same stages at some point.
I would agree it would be great to see the rally run on some of the old classic stages, but from a spectator point-of-view I don't fancy driving the length and breadth of the British Isles to watch stages. The thought of sleeping in a knackered old transit with a bunch of fellow sweaty / damp / farting individuals doesn't exactly fill me with enthusiasm either.
At least by basing the rally in one area, we are able to rent a cottage for a week and fill it with people who know and appreciate the rally. OK, we've got to get up in the middle of the night to get to some stages, but I don't mind that.
Last year, we were prepared for the rally in Wales to be a real disappointment. Ticketing fiasco aside, it was far from from it. I go this year with considerably more optimism.
Chris
CiaraC 02 November 2003, 22:27 Can you imagine the running costs for the latest machinery on an event covering the format the old RAC used ?? Its simply not viable. The Circuit of Ireland cannot even run to its old format for one reason or another. People living in the past is not going to help the sport in the future. Can I ask flat_in_5th, how many times did you spectate on the old RAC and how old are you ??
Teams are already speaking of pulling out of the WRC due to costs of the format proposed for next year without an event as spread out as the RAC...
flat-in-5th 02 November 2003, 23:30 1976 - 1996 (ish)! I stopped following the event for hundreds of miles when I had to drive hundreds of miles just to get to the start! (41 by the way!)
pamike 03 November 2003, 00:05 THIS WILL PROBABLY BE THE LAST RALLY.GB WE WILL ATTEND ,COSTS OF TICKETS,TRAFFIC JAMS AND ONLY BEING ALLOWED TO GO TO SPECIFIC VIEWING AREAS AS MARKED OUT IN THE PROGRAMME .SEEMS TO US THEY WANT THE MONEY BUT DONT REALLY CARE ABOUT THE REAL SPECTATOR .IF YOU ATTEND ANY BTRDA OR ANCRO EVENTS THEY R MORE VALUE FOR MONEY AND A RELAXED ATMOSPHERE WHICH MAKES IT A MORE ENJOYABLE EVENT TO ATTEND. WE WENT TO THE ACROPOLIS RALLY THIS YEAR AND IN FUTURE WILL ONLY GO TO THE OVERSEAS EVENTS.
flat-in-5th 03 November 2003, 00:13 man after my own heart. more cars, more action, easier access, cheaper etc, etc when you get away from WRC. why watch a WRC event for hundreds of pounds?
scoff 03 November 2003, 01:00 why spend a whole day here moaning........... get a fricking life you prik
johnfelstead 03 November 2003, 01:22 scoff,, there is such a lot of aggression in your posts. Is this because you don’t know how to express yourself properly or is it that you are just a lazy ****wit with no vocabulary?
Plans are afoot for my rally team to enter the RAC next year in November. Should be a lot of fun.
If you think this years Wales Rally GB is poor, wait until next year with the new 1000 pistes recee rules and 2 car works teams! Where will the decline end?
Mk2_heaven 03 November 2003, 01:24 well i shall still enjoy it
scoff 03 November 2003, 01:30 i have no problem with people who come here to post about the rally of GB..... i have no aggression towards any one other than the same old person from up north, who isnt willing to travel to the rally because of........ it aint on his door step.........
if you and your team want to do the roger albert clark next year....... all the best, but what does that to do with anything.
Mk2_heaven 03 November 2003, 01:33 just make the effort im coming from notts thats not on my doorstep its all part of the enjoyment! if it was thieves wood it wouldnt we half as much fun
