markwild 19 October 2003, 14:53 Folks, I've some sort of (oil?) leak causing occasional smoke from my motor under the bonnet - I'll come along at 4 - Anyone with any ideas is more than welcome to take a look -
I first noticed it a couple of weeks ago, when I fitted my kL and dawes, but I think its got more to do with the length of time the car stood - it rarely stays still for more than a day, but I didn't use it for 36 hours that weekend. Yesterday it stood, whilst I fetched a new tyre from Chester, so I noticed the smell again this morning - It goes after a while, so I think maybe a spot of oil per 24 hours or something.....
The oil level is fine and theres no oil on the drive, but I'd like to sort it - The only time that theres actually been smoke, it was coming from down by the D/p , wing side of it, near the bottom....
Cheers,
Mark
markwild 19 October 2003, 18:01 Good to see ya all down there today - I'll try and remember to keep an eye open for the next one....
Mark
chrisp 19 October 2003, 18:09 Nice to see everyone. I gave in when it started raining.
Nev_B 19 October 2003, 20:14 Good to see every one there, shame you guys left when the rain started. I would have liked a quick go in the RA Chris, and see them guages in action. Nice looking piece of kit that.
Mark, get the engine degreased and watch for the oil leak. May be an idea to turn the boost down until ytou know the cause. Nice sounding car you got there tho.
Glad your enjoying the P1 Scottste, was looking very clean today.
How are your ears Skoosh? Are they all bent up and ringing! Now be a good boy and do some painting! Those old 15's might be the best place to start, although your other half may not agree!
Really enjoyed this evening guys, so who's organinsing the next one? Getting a bit cold now, so I think we need to do a run and then into the Pub.
I think Oatcake won the sound off (very close though Tony), but they both sound good. I hope to get rid of the pea-shooter soon. Keep reading and you never know.
If any body liked the "S C O O B Y" lettering, I made a template to line them up which I still have. So if you want to do yours I will give you the contact address and you can borrow my template.
If you didn't like it - Tough it's done now!
Nice wheels Shrop, I will need your contact when I want mine done.
See you all soon
Nev
chrisp 19 October 2003, 20:41 Nev, no problem we'll go for a spin at the next one.
skoosh 19 October 2003, 21:54 Guys (and girls) nice to see the usuals there and a few new faces even if it was feckin cold.
Oat, as usual you turn out to be a top driving companion, thoroughly enjoyd the blast there and the blast back, I just hope that one day I too can enjoy the sound of my exhaust from behind although it doesn't sound any different to other scoobs to me! Next time you drive in front.....Anyone for pheasant? I bet it crapped itself mate !!!LOL.
Nev, like the badging on yours mate although I'll keep mine debadged I think.
Steve, your' alarm is far too complicated mate, wheels look great and your boy-racer exhaust is well........boy racerish and sounds beefy.
Blitz, be careful about spending too much mate, check out all the options and that 300bhp will be yours and thanx for the compliments about mine, she really does go doesn't she?!
Shane, or should I call you Leroy, can't wait to see the M3.
How about all driving over to TSL one Saturday?
Oat, good idea about the engine purge, £56 well spent I think especially at 96k !!!
Hope to see you all soon.
Skoosh.
p.s: Don't forget to come along to the Oxford Arms on 15th November.
scottste 19 October 2003, 22:33 Good to see everyone and put names to faces and to see the different things you have done to your cars.
Would like to come to TLS when you go, got a few things in mind that they can do for me.
Always up for a run
Good luck Blitz on the track on tuesday, let us know how you get on.
Oatcake 19 October 2003, 23:29 Evening all,

Blitz, great exhaust m8, nice to see im not the only boy-racer!lol
Nev, the scooby lettering looks great! let us know were you got it from m8y, and save the template it'll come in handy.
Skoosh, i dont now about the pheasant shatting itself but i neally did! and it makes me laugh when you say we're going to have a nice steady drive back, 6,000 rpm and above is NOT steady m8 lol
see you all soon
Oat
skoosh 20 October 2003, 19:04 Oat, it looks like that little spurt back last might has cost me an oil leak !!!!!! BOLLOX !!!!
Skoosh.
Nev_B 20 October 2003, 20:14 Any joy with Ian, Skoosh?
I reckon its the stilleto's. You've put your heel through an oil pipe cos your pushin your foot too far down now!! LOL.
How much are you losing a day?
Nev
Shropshire-Guy 21 October 2003, 02:43 Simon.

SG
Oatcake 21 October 2003, 09:33 Skoosh,
Hope its nowt serious m8, let us know how you get on with it or if theres owt i can do to help.
Oat
skoosh 21 October 2003, 18:45 See what you guys reckon........
.......after Sunday's meet at Loggerheads, Oat and I had a farely brisk drive home......mostly at 5k and above (revs).
Monday, I noticed a few drops of black oil under the car purely by chance. I looked under the car but could only see oil visible on the drip tray, ckecked the oil on dipstick which registered just above "E" from a cold engine.
Drove steadily home at under 3000 rpm, total of about 4 miles and noticed absolutely no power losses or strange noises etc etc...
Once home I put about a quarter of a pint (if that) in the car and the dipstick read "F" or near enough. This morning I checked the oil and no change. Drove to work steadily, parked up all day and during that time only one drop of oil was on the carpark.
Checked level before driving home, no change. I'll check it again later and tomorrow morning but for now has anyone any ideas?
Skoosh.
p.s: Nev, your' mate doesn't answer his mobile mate, perhaps he could contact me instead and I can arrange for him to look at it.
I have a suspicion that it may be a faulty oil filter seal (?).
markwild 21 October 2003, 19:33 I'm going to post a question in Drivetrain regarding crankcase pressure - it may help....
Nev_B 21 October 2003, 19:39 Skoosh
He may have changed his number. I will try and contact him tomorrow for you. I would remove the underbody tray and have a good nosey. This is not a hard job. Leave it off for the day and see where the oil is coming from and if there are any drips on the floor when it has stood.
As we said to Mark, it may be worth degreasing the engine first to clear all residues so you can see where any new leaks are coming from.
Could be one of many things tho. Any blue smoke out of the exhaust when hot or cold or when under boost?
Good luck mate and keep the revs down for a while until you find out what it is.
Nev
Oatcake 22 October 2003, 16:51 Skoosh,
I'd certainly be taking Nev's advise on this one. Take the underbody tray off, degrease the bottom of the engine, run the engine and see if there's any noticeable leaks. Just one thought, have you had a service recently? could there be any spilled oil from a recent service?
Hope it turns out alright for you m8y,
Oat
skoosh 22 October 2003, 19:10 Guys, I can't figure this out at all!! No visible sign of any leak today and there's no smoke at all coming from the exhaust. Oat, you didn't notice any smoke on Sunday did you?
I would take the undertray off but living on a main road on a row of terraces means I havn't got a drive never mind a garage with a
pit!!!
I'll take it down to Subaru on Friday afternoon.
Cheers guys.
Skoosh.
Nev_B 22 October 2003, 19:37 Skoosh
Spoke to Ian the mechanic today. He did get your call but was driving. He didn't recognise the number so did not call back.
I text you today to say to call him after 4.
He's working Saturday AM, but may be busy so give him a call. Alot cheaper than Subaru.
Can't be that serious if your not losing much in a day, but would still drive it carefully.
Let me know how you get on. Good luck.
Nev
skoosh 22 October 2003, 21:20 Cheers Nev, I rang Ian and spoke to him tonight. I'm going to see him on Saturday afternoon and we'll take it from there. I havn't taken the car over 3000rpm since finding the leak, just in case.
Sorry I couldn't speak earlier but I've had to reprimand a few of my staff for using mobiles at work and I must set an example !!
Thanx mate.
Si.
Oatcake 23 October 2003, 16:58 Skoosh,
No smoke from your exhaust m8.
Oat
blitzboy1 23 October 2003, 18:49 Hi all!
Oat and me wereon bout ur little prob skoosh and i'll second wot he says bout the service, certainly worth thinking about.
Blitz.
skoosh 23 October 2003, 19:02 No way. car was serviced about 3500 miles ago, so it's defo not from a service!
No leak today either.
Skoosh.
ps: anyone fancy a lamb kebab????????BAAAAAAAAAAH.
blitzboy1 23 October 2003, 20:36 Hmmmmmmmm, save me some.
It seems as tho there may have been a spot of oil just sitting on the block that was spilt from when u had ur oil changed which leads me 2 the conclusion of when ur engine gets hot the oil thins out and becomes more searching hence the odd drip, well thats my theory anyway, now the bit of oil is depleted hence no more drips, walaa.
Sorry bout that, i have to have a rant every now and again lol.
Blitz.
nuclear_pond 24 October 2003, 23:33 So are we gonna have another meet up then? I missed the last one. How about this sunday pm?
markwild 25 October 2003, 14:06 Guys, I've just got back from my service and MOT (PASSED ! :D )
The leak is from BOTH rocker gasket covers, and I have a small leak where the prop-shaft goes into g-box. I'll keep an eye on the level, but I'll have to get them fixed soon-ish.....
Also, I need 2 new front tyres ( :o ) - but I knew that was coming soon.....
Skoosh - you had chance to look at yours yet ?
Mark
skoosh 25 October 2003, 16:15 D I A G N O S I S C O M P L E T E !!!!!!!!
There's a definate leak from the crank seal, not major but there nontheless. Ian's going to repair it a week on Saturday, and the price, well.........let's say I'll never use Subaru again.....not at £60 per hour.
Cheers for putting me in touch Nev.
Skoosh.
blitzboy1 26 October 2003, 17:08 I know u say subaru £60 per hr but believe it or not they r the 3rd cheapest, cheaper than ford and vauxhall by a fair way but i c wot ur saying.
Blitz.
