View Full Version : Mesh questions ?

I've relocated the front number plate on my MY98, leaving the radiator exposed. I'm thinking of fitting some mesh to protect it, but not sure whether to buy some ready made, or make one myself. Can anyone recommend anywhere that sells decent ready made items at reasonable prices ?

I'm hoping someone can answer some questions I have about fitting it;

Where's the best place to buy mesh if I do it myself ? B&Q, Wickes, Homebase etc. ? Any particular type ? Cost ?

Do you have to remove the bumper to fit it, or can it be done in situ ?

The MY98 bumper has a number of horizontal slats in front of the radiator, does the mesh fit in front of or behind these ?

Any other pertinent info about doing it yourself ?

Many Thanks in advance.

Tony

Hi Tony.
Ive got a template for this, I can supply you a pre cut piece for £15 inc p+p
You are going to trmove the original number plate mount right?
I fix it to the slats using the very small zip ties.
Email me if interested.
Cheers, Rob.

Hi Rob,

I'm interested, have you got any pics of one fitted ? Does it have any sort of edging fitted to stop it rubbing on the surrounding bumper areas in contact with the mesh ?

Failing that, can I have a look at your car ? I also live in Warrington so meeting up shouldn't be hard.

I've already removed the number plate bracket (bloody TORX security fixings - why ?) so it should be an easy fitment.

I'm also considering installing the mesh at an angle, perhaps cable-tied via two small holes drilled in the underside of the bumper vent, but I think this would mean a slightly larger mesh than a vertically mounted one, so perhaps meeting up would be best ?

Let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Tony

Rob,

Just checked the MRO styling website to see what it looks like, and I like what I see. I've also just checked the car, and there isn't much scope for mounting at an angle, so you're offer is looking very promising, I'll mail you.

Cheers,

Tony

Did my own with Black Mesh from a local car shop, but Halfords do it too.
Cost of a large piece of mesh was £11.
I cut it to shape with wifey's kitchen scissors, :D: doing it very slowly, by trial and error.
I fixed the lower piece by small pieces of enamelled copper wire twisted behind the horizontal slats.
Then I meshed the upper bit, in two pieces, same method except held on with zip ties.
You only need take the grille off if you do it this way, and it can go back to standard any time you want, or be removed for respraying:(:

Thanks for the pics Jeff (Alcazar), looks pretty good. Thanks for the tips too, I'm planning on spraying mine as well.
