What's that all about
Its a Yamaha Zip or summat, one of them there twist and go jobs. A garage near were she works has offered to do it for her for £30.
Is that reasonable?
Is there any point?
Surely it'll just make the bloody thing louder. Certainly won't go faster......will it?

Derestriction on a zip50 got me to 50mph instead of 30.
DO IT!

Taking the baffles out isn't a derestriction in terms of power. These engines are usually restricted by 'chokes' in the inlet manifold, limit stops in the carb or chokes in the exhaust, some also use modified cdi units to electronically restrict the revs.
If you are going to derestrict it, only use a quality synthetic 2 stroke oil - else it'll blow up :D

No it's deffo a yamaha, maybe the zip bit is wrong
Anyway, so the general fing is that £30 is ok but it's reduce the life of the bike yes?
Also is derestricting the same as decatting in the world of bikes cos they are totally different in the car world?
Mr A, what do you know? Work in a bike shop or something ;)

Just beware that if she is a learner on L-plates and her insurance states its a restricted model then any changes without notifying the insurance co. may invalidate her insurance.
This statement was explained to me by my local bike shop when I asked about doing this.....I didn't because of this....u never know.

This was the confusing thing on this thread - Decatting is taking the Catalytic converter out of the exhaust to free the breathing up. But to just doing this doesnt do that much I wouldnt think. Derestricting in scooter terms means taking the 30mph limit off it. Or are we talking about Derestricting the exhaust ?

Most low-end scooters have restrictors (like a big washer, really) either in the exhaust -- to limit peak flow -- or in the inlet, to limit the engine's breathing. It's cheaper than using a fancy CDI that has a modded advance curve.
Remove these, jet up a little bit, and you get more air & fuel = more poke (just not very much more :p:D)
Providing it's rejetted right, it shouldn't affect engine life. Use a quality 2stroke oil (Silkolene ProScoot or similar) and a gold-palladium or platinum spark plug and she'll be laughing.

Top speed on twist and go scooters is also restricted usually by a spacer on the variator (like not allowing the use of higher gears in an automatic car), remove this and it will go faster!,....as richard says just before it blows up!
