Know some guys back home that can knock these out - bound to be a better price than granite sourced @ SE prices.

Anyone any experience of slate or other stone worktops? I know I'll have to re-inforce to support them.

Slate. Looks nice ,depending on what type. But can stain. Stone more durable. You can buy excellent sealers for both. Support well!!

You may want to consider glass as well.

It looks great but will scratch a bit like any other surface. This place does splashbacks, tables, worktops etc.
You can paint the underside to give it a nice coloured look or sandblast it...
