[Edited by Vinesh - 9/4/2003 9:36:01 PM] Dazza012 09 April 2003, 21:50 I have a 8ft fence round 2 sides of my garden, 10ft Concrete post with 2 x 1ft gravel boards then 1 x 6ft fence panel sits on that. [Edited by Dazza012 - 9/4/2003 9:50:27 PM] Vinesh 04 September 2003, 21:09 We have purchased a corner plot house. The fences around the house need replacing (About 8 panels) The garden has high grounds, which means u can see people walking across the road and they can see u in the garden. I would like some privacy and there are two solutions: 1 Have the garden dug up so it sit lower. More costs involved becuase of the steps, new grass, etc. 2 Have higher fences/Bushes around the house. Cheaper option. I would like to go for the second option; Whats the tallest fence available? Any advice on garden bushes? They have to be low maintence. Any advice would be appreicated. IWatkins 04 September 2003, 21:22 IIRC you are limited to a 2 metre high fence, but each area has it's own rules so a quick check with your council will be required. You say you are near a road so this especially may have a bearing on how high your fence can be. A yew hedge would also work, very low maint. but takes a while to grow. Cheers Ian Vinesh 04 September 2003, 21:25 I didn't know rules applied to fence heights. I will have to check with the council. paulr 04 September 2003, 21:29 Carefully placed trees.(them fast growing ones).Thats what i have. IWatkins 04 September 2003, 21:48 Yew hedges, yes you can, but I've only ever seen them to about 2ft high and they weren't cheap. You need to plant them about 18 - 24 inches apart as well, so will need a few. Check out these guys (http://www.buckingham-nurseries.co.uk/acatalog/sample_hedges.html). Using the numbers you give, i.e. 8 panels at 6 foot each using their calculator and planting at 18 inch intervals = 32 plants required which would come to around £120. This is for 1.5 - 2 ft tall plants. These would take a while to reach 8 ft tall as they only grow up to about a foot a year in good conditions. Of course, you don't have to use yew, you could use some of the faster growing hedges, but you would need to keep on top of it. Fence panels are a quick easy fix and you can do stuff to them on the inwards facing sides to make them blend in better, e.g. trellis to grow climbers up, darker stain etc. Cheers Ian Vinesh 04 September 2003, 21:49 Cheers mate. Vinesh 04 September 2003, 21:56 Dazza- Thats a good height. Did u have any problems with the council, ie too high? tonybooth 08 September 2003, 15:54 Vinesh Just for info. Leeds City Council planning regs. are as follows: Adjacent to road - 1M Max High Not Adj. to road - 2M Max High Over these limits need permission. They also have guidelines on types of materials e.g. No pallisade in residential areas. Cheers TONY Vinesh 08 September 2003, 20:22 Cheers Tony. I have contacted my Local City Council and they are going to send some paperwork through for planning permission. |
