View Full Version : Remember 1998?
johnfelstead 09 April 2003, 19:40 quality.
Escort WRC's, Works Toyota's, WRC SEAT's, proper EVO's and Impreza's ;) and rallying outside the vale of neath with no specator pens or tickets. :D
How things change in such a short period of time.

BuRR 04 September 2003, 18:24 I found this video on an old CDROM last week, and have managed to compress it down a bit. Its now 10.23 megs and was taken at the time by my (then) 10 year old son, so the camera angles (and stability!) are a bit questionable, but it certainly brings back some memories :D
I just loved the sound of those Megans as they screamed past!
I'd be interested to know what you think.

RallyMarshal 04 September 2003, 20:08 Just watched the footage and looking at the placement of spectators on the first piece of forestry road makes me see exactly why spectator viewing areas are required on the stages Im afraid...
Paul..
st33ly 04 September 2003, 21:13 Only a rally marshal could produce a comment like that!!!
Derek FKS 85 04 September 2003, 21:19 And not even near a forest tonight!!!
johnfelstead 04 September 2003, 23:38 I forgot to add
Jumpers for goalposts ........ :D
I'll pass that on to the organisors of Rally Finland, Acropolis, Cyprus and Monte Carlo next time i am there Paul as they are obviously doing things badly right now.
RallyMarshal 05 September 2003, 12:50 LOL and LOL.. Was a little dry in comment I guess!
John, please do. My comments were from a marshalling standpoint on ANY event - clubman rally to WRC level. The difference is that you dont get that many spectator at clubman rallies.
Id be seriously concerned if I saw people stood spectating in those locations on a stage I was running on any rally...
Paul..
kwispel 11 September 2003, 16:54 ... mind you, still brilliant memories about the 1998 edition...
Took a Finn who WAS my good friend to the rally. He was studying in Wales at the time.
As a "reward", he would take me out and introduce me a group of Finnish girls (amongst which his ex-grilfriend) who were also over in Cardiff.
Nothing special, except that he forgot to tell me he was trying to get his ex back... All in vain, my wife told me later she didn't want him back anyway. ;o)
RallyMarshal 11 September 2003, 17:07 Kwispel,
Pity you feel like that.. Have you ever marshalled an event? Instead of critisising, why not train up and marshal events and give something back to the sport.
The standards of marshalling are improving year on year, and should improve further with the requirements of being a registered marshal and also the training schedules that are being put in place. I accept that not everyone does it correctly, I accept that not everyone can deal with the public in the best manner but marshals give up their time on events through the year, as well as the Rally GB and that earns them respect in my book.
Oh and AFAIK, NO marshals will be checking tickets on the Wales Rally GB - the carpark attendants have that role rather than the marshals per-se.
Thanks
Paul..
kwispel 11 September 2003, 17:21 No personal criticism to you RallyMarshal. First of all, I was definitely referring to those years. I do indeed appreciate that the levels of marshalling have greatly improved on rally GB since then. The access to the stages might not be free anymore, but if that is the cost of proper marshalling, it's better than to get the event dropped off the calendar.
Yes, have been marshalling in Belgium in a previous life. We were under horrible pressure from all these w****** of the anti-rally groups etc overthere. We were afraid the smallest glitch would have led to the government banning rallying over all.
Needless to say I was shocked when I saw these two kids in that situation.
Good luck with marshalling !
S.
RallyMarshal 11 September 2003, 17:39 No personal critisism taken...
Paul.
M J B 11 September 2003, 20:01 Quality Vid :D
Speccys at the end were looking death in the face IMHO. but i have done it
Rallygb.co.uk 12 September 2003, 00:04 ... some good (and very valid) points on here.
Unfortunately there are some marshalls (exactly like spectators) who spoil it for the decent majority.
... and if you think I'm going to download 10MB of video over a 56k modem you can forget it !! LOL
Mike
kwispel 12 September 2003, 16:22 Hei BuRR,
Agree with RallyGB.co.uk.
Can't you compact this to only 500K ?
Just record the sound ! (That's all we need !)
JackClark 15 September 2003, 00:24 Doh! "Access to this service has been denied, please contact support"
Was looking forward to that as well, I stuffed my 98 first night of that rally then managed to half blow my hand off with a firework. Still have fond memorys of holding my hand against the window all night to ease the pain whilst listening to peoples "oohs" and "ahhs" when they spotted the condition of my poor scooby. Safety was not my middle name.
BuRR 15 September 2003, 07:32 lol.. I wonder if my bandwidth allowance has been exceeded?
I'll take a look.
dan_vector 15 September 2003, 18:45 damn it!!! I wanna see that video!!!
Link doesn't work for me either!!!
JackClark 16 September 2003, 00:22 On it's way down now, cheers.
JackClark 16 September 2003, 14:14 Great vid thanks Burr and little Burr.
BuRR 16 September 2003, 17:20 lol
He's not that little any more ;)
kwispel 09 November 2003, 17:39 RallyMarshall, safety has always been a disgrace at the RAC, and not because they're aren't enough rules (the Brits have always been top for making rules) or not enough marshalls.
I still remember an 18-year old kid with his 16-year old girlfriend Marshalling on that 1998 run at a place where a group of 200 spectators had turned up.
There was an S at the end of a long straight. Cars would arrive at 120mph+ through the fog.
Half the spectators were at the end of the straight exactly on the outside of the corner. Yes, indeed STUPID.
The only thing our marshalls said was the girl asking the guy "do you think these people are in a dangerous place ?" and he just pulled up his shoulders...
It often seems the spectators at Rally GB have more sense that the marshalls who're generally more worried about somebody coming in without a ticket than 10 people being sent to hospital.
