View Full Version : Arrggh - spluttering hot water

Not pleased - it seems that I might have an airlock in the hot water systems in a 90s house with 'standard' boiler upstairs wuith cold water tank in the loft. The hot water runs fine for about 15secs and then splutters and eventually stops. Close the tap for a bit and again it is fine for around 15secs.

Have tried putting a cloth under the bath mixer tap, turn the hot on full and then the cold on full (ie. trying to force the air lock out using the pressure of the cold water). I can then hear bubbles and gurgles from the water tank (not the one in the roof). I have done this a number if times BUT it makes no difference. As it is gurgling away everytime I do it is that proof that there is an air lock and I just need to carry on doing it ?

Am I confined to being smelly for the rest of my life or do I just have to get a plumber in ?

Thanks very much for any help - the missus ain't impressed !

The cold water tap in the bath will be from the same storage tank as the hot water so the pressure will be the same. Kitchen should have mains pressure cold.

Its unlikely to be an air lock unless the system has been drained recently, more likely that the top of the cylinder is partially blocked with scale or other debris and what you are doing when opening the tap is just draining the vent pipe of water which then refills when the tap is shut. Safest bet is to call a Plumber out as there is alot of potential for water sloshing about.

OK thanks for the comments, tried using the kitchen mains pressure tap and it now seems that all the hot water taps are working fine APART from the bath ! I assume that this means that a piece of crap/air has got lodged in the bath pipe from the hot water cylinder.

Any ideas ?

You need to work out how the pipe is connected to the bath taps. Do any pipes T off before leading to the bath tap? Are they ok?

Normally the chooses are force water down it at a higher presure, drain and refill or fit bleed values.
