just painted a frame and I keyed up the surface first. Now paint went on fine. But I knocked it by accident the other day and its peeled off. Why is this. Should I have undercoated first rather than putting on gloss.

Was it a cheap gloss? To be honest, for a job to last just keying a surface and re-glossing is not the answer. It should be well sanded and undercoated as you said. If it wasnt keyed sufficiently the peeling would occur especially if the surface wasn't cleaned properley either. Now you will probably have to do it properly :)

I gave it a rub with some sand paper just to scratch the surface and then put the gloss on. Oh and it was B&Q gloss.

So if i had used an undercoat it would not have peeled ?

which is best undercoat or primer/undercoat ?

I used the gloss on some MDF doors i made and I put 2 coats of MDF primer on first and the gloss has gone on treat. Really glossy finish no peeling at all.

thanks for the advice

Also the original paint was really old and discoloured.

what does the undercoat do, does it just allow the gloss to stick ?

If you had rubbed it down properly, removing the glossy surface, and then glossed it then it should have lasted a little longer. I can only imagine you knocked a bit where you didnt rub it down properly.

As with any job, its worth doing it properly the first time round otherwise you end up having to do it twice.

Always wash down old paintwork first, then rub down with sandpaper until it is smooth and until no more shiney bits can be seen. Then undercoat and then finally gloss. If after undercoating it still looks a little off colour, do another coat of undercoat before finally glossing.

I hate paintwork myself but it's worth the additional work for a perfect long lasting finish.

Not sure about the quality of B&Q branded paint as I alwasy by crown or dulux. I have used B&Q emultion before and got so pissed off by the 3rd coat that still hadnt covered evenly I promised myself I would never buy cheap paint again.

I used the gloss on some MDF doors i made and I put 2 coats of MDF primer on first and the gloss has gone on treat. Really glossy finish no peeling at all.

Because you had a proper matt surface to work with.

is that a bugs-eye scoob ?

£350 for a fuel pump ouch. Well if its any consilation, I got a knackered suspension bearing, rusty centre exhaust section and a scored rear brake disc. Hopefully sorting the bearing out this weekend.

Oh and painting's all about the prep work - whatever it is you're painting. :) Practice helps as well...

easy salsa king, people keep giving me conflicting views!!!!

right well my dad had a look at the weekend and it would appear that i never keyed it up enough. Will also invest in a good undercoat too.

Will also invest in a good undercoat too

best investment is a strong back and forth.. up and down arm motion :d

(Thanks for the pump post.. I am already looking into that one if Triton dont come through)

its the new paint thats peeling. I did key it up before hand but not enough and with the wrong grade paper. didn't really realise at the time. Where the new paint has peeled you can see the old paint is smooth and shiney, so clearly not keyed it properly. I have now keyed it with a 80grit aluminuim oxide. Hardly have to rub it and you can see it instantly keys it properly.

Also bought undercoat too, 2 coats then gloss.

I haven't done much painting so am still learning.

The MDF doors I made have come up with an excellent finish, flat glossy and no runs, really pleased.
