May be a daft question but can you buy alarms that can be operated with a pet in the house (dog in this case!) ... if so, can anyone point me in the right direction of a few makes / models ...
Thanks in advance
Phil :D

Or is the best option to 'zone' the house and keep the hound out of those rooms ?
Cheers

Detection systems DS835i/DS820i pet freindly detector they are fine for pets, we have 3 cats and no problems at all withe the little furry things.
Have these on your alarm system and you should have no problems
I'll try and find some info on the net for you.

It may be the same thing as i8gtmf described, but when I had an alarm installed the installer recommended a zoned PIR for the garage. I think it has different trigger thresholds depending on the height at which something is moving. So a mouse moving across the floor is not going to set it off, but something larger and over a metre from the floor will do.

why not just lock the dog in one room and use door switches on that room not pirs..thats what we have.

There are several ways to deal with pets and alarms the weight sensitive stuff as discused, shock sensors on all windows doors etc, shut the pet into a room and zone off that room, pet alley pirs which leave an area 1m from floor not covered or sell pet :D
Problem with just fitting door contacts is that if mr scum bucket thieving git breaks in through your window and steals you dvd player, prize dvd collection and scooby keys the exits via the window no alarm goes off, seen it happen.:(

i8gtmf -Shockgard seismic detectors on the window frames rather than PIR or door switches would be a good solution. No doubt more expensive, but they'll do the job.
I realise that this won't help Goldfinger in Herts, but I must recommend South Cheshire Alarms if anyone in this area is looking for a quality alarm system.

good point about the windows, our dog room is the utility which has a door in and out (sensors) but no window. (they could tunnel through the wall i suppose!)

I would have though a Staff rooming around all the House was better protection than any alarm! I have a dog and went for the pet sensitive PIR's with sensors on the doors the theory being if some one comes in whilst the dog is there they will exit quickly with a few bite marks to rember the experence by and the alarm is mostly there for when the dog is out.

our alarm works on the volume of air in a room so if a door/window is broken, the volume changes and alarm goes off. We have two cats and so far no problems - can give you the name of the company who is relatively local for you (Herts based).
