Question

looking for a bit of extra fitness training and fancy trying a self-defence martial art. Looking for some advice on what's involved and if they're any clubs around Motherwell.

I've just (re-)started at Starthclyde Uni club. AFAIK, there are clubs in Stirling, Motherwell, Hamilton, East Kilbride, Strathaven and Giffnock.

M'well club is Mon 2000-2100, Fri 1830-1930 @ YMCA.

Or call John on 07850 270 758

(Disclaimer: Information taken from a flyer I had handy so may be a wee bit out-of-date.)

Cheers m8

Have you done any other martial arts or boxing? What's the training like? similar to regular boxers training?

Done some sport kickboxing, Tukido, Tae-Kwon Do, Sport Karate. No boxing though.

I have had varied experiences training in the different styles and with different instructors. TBH, I think the best way to find out is to pop down to the class and see if it suits you.

As an example, the last class I attended involved a warm-up, series of padwork exercises in pairs, bagwork, clinching and light sparring. Lasted just shy of 2 hours and I was puggled by the end - may be more an indication of my current state of fitness than of the intensity of the class ;-)

Hi Ozzy,

Try here IAKSA I've been a member for about 9 years, it's not mua thia, but if you want to get fit you wont find anything better.

Also, there are tournaments throughout the year that you can enter once you have a bit of experience, but you only fight people at your own level. It is in all honest one of the best styles around. Have a look at the instructors page on the website, and you will see we have a few european and world champions in our ranks.

Cheers,
Crawf

Best form of training for fitness

This is true of most martial arts

Go for it you wont regret it and you will get in shape faster than you think

RS Grant,

I've a mate in Leuchars (not too far from you) who teaches Tae Kwon Do. He's a fitness machine and very accomplished at the art...

If you want I can give you his contact details.

Cheers

Well, if he doesnt mind taking someone from a Beginner Stage then that would be alright!!

He doesnt drive a late-spec Dark Blue Classic with gold wheels does he??

If you can have a word with him to see if its cool to see someone who is a novice then I'd be grateful...

If everything is alright then just mail me the contact details on farnanson_2k@hotmail.com, thanks again for letting me know!

Cheers,
Grant

Grant,

He doesn't drive a late spec dark blue classic, but I do!

He takes classes of all abilities so being a beginner isn't a problem.

I've emailed you his particulars if you want to send him an email.

Hope you get it sorted.

Thanks alot for that mate... I'll give him a shout and chat it over with him!!

Its just that I had a "good drive" with a DBM Classic one night coming back from Leuchars!!

You wouldnt remember having a wee bit of fun with a Black Series 2 RS Turbo one night, coming back late from Leuchars would you??

Cheers,
Grant

Why don't you all just go along to one of the Glasgow meets at Coatbridge?
