Taking the car on holiday on the mainland. As a holder of full. comp. on the car do I have to inform the insurer and am I covered the same way as here in UK?

My insurer issues a green-card. Costs a few quid (<20). You just need to tell them which countries you'll be driving in, and you don't actually need to carry the card with you.

well I know that I don't need a green card to Czech Republic

my concern was that if something goes wrong that when I come back the insurer will tell me that it'll go all from my pocket.

well not that I'm wishing for anything to go wrong :)

Most policies now allow upto "a certain number" of days abroad included withijn the policy - however you should always aadvise them of the dates that you are travelling, whether you are towing a trailer or require amended cover for additional drivers...

The policies normally will give you the minimum level of cover automatically whilst abroad i.e. Roads Risk Cover only (Third Party Cover) however most of the companies we use will then extend cover to either COmprehensive (if thats the cover you have on your policy) or Third Party Fire & Theft at no charge....:D:D ... not sure what the Directs do?? Maybe they still charge for this add-on???

Anyway...best to call them anyway:D:D
