Does anybody know where to go for insurance for a learner driver?

I can get a "reasonable" car for a few hundred quid that would be ideal to learn in, but the quotes I've had are rediculous - well over £1000, even for third party cober only.

Is it actually possible to get a realistically priced policy (i.e. less than the value of the car!) for a 17 year old (female) learner?

Keep the car small 1.1 litre tops or Group 1-3 and at least 10 years old.Ask your daughters instructor about pass plus which involves 6 extra lessons covering night and motorway driving etc as some companies give substantial discounts.They often allow discount for L driver provided they see passplus cert within 3 months.Try their website.As for the policy I suggest telephoning the following as this usually gets a better price than on line systems which don't ask questions about pass plus :-

Norwich Union Direct / Liverpool Victoria / CIS (Co-operative Insurance ) / Tesco / Direct Line / Privilege

Don't bother with the high street brokers and do insure it in your daughter's name as this way she build up her own NCD making her insurance far more affordable in 3 or 4 years time.

Best of luck and good hunting as I am sure you can cover a small car for a learner at well below £1000 unless you live in the heart of the city.

I was with the CIS in my first year of driving and they provided a very good quote

Bit of an assumption there - *MY* daughter is only 3 months old!
