Just had my Honda VFR400 stolen! I was just getting use to taking her for a spin most days and we were getting on nicely. Already I miss her and it's only been 12 hours. It took me a long time to find her.

I need something low in the saddle and even though I've had a licence for 3 years I'm relatively inexperienced. Also, I'm no mechanic and if/when the insurance pays out I'll be a little short on the £'s.

Sensible suggestions welcome.

If you would care to look in the for sale section I am selling my CBR600.
Its low in the saddle and relatively bomb proof, never had to take it apart and the oil doesnt leak...

Looks and sounds good. Not sure I was looking to fork out 3k. Why are you selling and what's her bad points?

I was hoping for some helpful advice and not to be sold your unwanted motors. Also, I would like to try something different. The NC24 sounds so similar to my previous, NC30 ...

Try a Honda CB500. A good one can be had for about £1500 to £2000, they handle well and go quite well too, (remember they have their own race series) They are also cheap to insure.
Otherwise a tidy Suzuki bandit 600 would be a good choice, also cheap and fun.

Guys...I'm in mourning. I have to console myself with chocolate 3 times a day!
If you're serious about the bikes that are for sale, try a little harder to sell them to me, e.g. information would be useful, where, how much, mileage condition, etc...

Get ypourself a Motard-lots of choices.

Different and I guarentee you will really enjoy riding. After 7 months I still can't wait to get out on it, whereas my other bikes I can take or leave them.

(Most) of us Motards a re a friendly bunch-see www.supermotard.co.uk

How does this fit the "something low in the saddle" requirement?

Opps-missed the "Low in the saddle" bit.

However, not all is lost, as some motards aren't that tall. OK, the choice is cut down a little, but lower seated one's are out there. I've only a 298 inside leg but manage my 650 easily.

Try one out!

What about a 250 2 stroke like the Aprilia RS250,or Honda NSR250 or Suzuki RGV250? They're all in the same size/price range/performance bracket as an NC30.
Mmm, mind you it'll be hard to find one that's not knackered Except maybe a low mileage Aprilia.

What are the 2 stroke 250's like for a spot of motorway commuting?

T-bird,

Just had my NC30 stolen too. Based upon what you say you want, I'd second the vote for an SV650. I've tried the Aprilia RS250 and didn't get on with it. Coming from a V4 there is no torque and no engine braking so you'll have to adapt (this was too much for me)

I'm returning to a 748 after a break of a year but the high seat and sporty riding position probably aren't what you are after.

Cheers,

Simon

p.s. you'll find the ZXR400 a fair bit taller with a rock hard rear end. Engine wise it will take a bit of thrashing (relatively) to get it going, but can be tuned as cheap as chips.

I bought a SV650 after passing last year but to be honest I now think it was a mistake. I have had a VFR800 for the last 6 months which is great, and I much prefer it to the SV. But when being serviced last week I borrowed a CB500 - what a laugh !! It is low in the saddle so even my short legs could touch down, fast enough for commuter stuff and is light and easy to manoeuvre. And they can be bought cheap !!

I tried a few bikes for size today, including the SV650. I'm probably going to stick with a 400/500, possibly something boring like the GPZ500 or CB4-500. I struggle to get most bikes off their stand on a level surface, let alone a bigger bike on a road, or similar, with a bit of a camber. No need to be dropping the thing unnecessarily!

All I need now is some insurance money and a bike for sale near me, and of course the weather for further inspiration.

I'm surprised your friend wants £2k for the ZXR400. Why does it need a new battery? What's the overall condition of the bike and what's the handling like? Why is he getting rid? How many owners, etc, etc?
