He was penalised 10 seconds for overtaking under waved yellow flags on the first lap -- dropped him to third. If you watch the BBC coverage again, you can see when he does it, he clearly passes Gibernau (I think) and you can see a marshal waving the flag as he does it ....

flat4 - likewise, i was sitting there saying that he'd just overtaken under yellow, noone believed me, the commentators didnt mention it.

I feel vindicated :)

real shame though - from the angle it looked like his view was blocked all the way up the straight, then he was along side as they past the marshall. Oh well.

Yep, we saw it and thought they would give him a pit lane call in, but nobody mentioned it so we thought it must have been OK.
If they announced it while he was racing I think you'd have seen some pretty impressive lap times while he tried to make up the 10 seconds - what a shame.

It's not like it's going to dent his championship chances though is it? He was after all the moral victor on the day (which must piss Biaggi off ;)) and I'm sure we'll see him on the top podium spot at the Sachsenring.

Matt :)

I was there watching at the esses, great race. :)

Rossi was just playing with Biaggi for lap after lap, getting alongside under the Dunlop bridge just enough to rattle Biaggi. Sure enough he over cooked it and allowed Rossi through.

Rossi slowed at the end to show off some awesome slides. If he'd known of the 10 second penalty he probably could have made that gap by the end.

Nice hot day as well:)
